I was wondering who gives heartworm and flea prevention evey month or who does not. Is it really necessary for it to be given to them every month, or can they go without it?
It depends on your area. We live in East Texas and I would not personally let Jaxx go without it. Especially with how bad mosquitoes were last year here in TX. I know areas in Dallas sprayed for mosquitoes but we heard from friends in that area that said they were still bad even after spraying.
Fleas can cause tape worm and can just be aggravating for the dogs skin as well as they spread fast. I prefer to prevent rather then treat after the fact.
I only treated my dogs when I lived in WV during the Spring and Summer for fleas/ticks/heartworm since it got so cold there that it wasn't really an issue in the Fall and Winter. It stays so warm here in TX though that Jaxx gets treated year around here.
I have heard from friends that do not treat that they had a hard time with fleas last year but I never saw a flea on Jaxx.
We use a Dewormer during the warm months. We don't get fleas where we live but have treated for it before (when she did have fleas) after traveling. In the future, I will bath her before leaving to come home and treat if necessary.
I give HW treatment once every 45 days. Vets will tell you it's a must to treat every 30 days, but if you research the life cycle of HW's, it's not necessary.
I give heart worm every month but only treat for fleas if they have them but i still haven't figured out is why they have to test for heartworm every year if you are on preventative?
Amberleah lou lou and my cats are on Earth Animal products for flea and ticks, they have little bit in their food daily al year long. Kim from dogsgone natural put them on it. I stopped it for winter but just talked to Kim said I need to give it all year long.

Well, I switched to it after Butterbean had a bad reaction to Frontline, and she hasn't had a bad reaction to it yet after two months of use. Every dog is different, I guess!
