Default Chloe my watch doggie

Okay first of all Chloe never barks at people at the door - and I mean NEVER! On the other hand her sister Colette will hit the screen to bark hysterically at just someone walking down the sidewalk and Chloe will just sit back and ignore everything going on around her - or so I thought until last night!

About 7:30/8pm last night, it was already dark outside, but I had the front door opened and the screen locked to get some fresh air in the house and this guy comes walking up to my door. Well naturally Colette hit the screen and sounded like she was going to rip him from limb to limb so I picked her up to calm her down but the guy kept his distance still. It was hard to see him really because I didn't turn the porch light on but he was telling me he was from some charity and that he wasn't selling anything that he was just looking for donations. Now this could have been true, but I found it a little hard to believe especially when after I told him I was sorry that I couldn't afford to donate anything and he tells me that anything will help, even a dollar or some loose pocket change or even a PENNY! As he is saying this he is getting braver and walking closer to the screen door and when he made his move my nice quite little Chloe took the que and she too came charging the door and barking like mad. I told him again, No Sorry! and he walked away with a "Well thank you and God Bless!"

There was no way I was going to open the screen door to hand him "even just a penny" when here I am a single mother and it is already dark outside and no neighbors are out. After he left I closed my door and locked it and wondered to myself was he just trying to get me to open the door so he could over power me and force himself inside and do God only knows what. Did Colette and especially Chloe sense something was not right with this guy and they were warning him to stay away from their Mommy and warning me to not open the door! Or was this guy seriously out looking for donations? I can't really say, but I'm sorry if you are out looking for donations you do not go to people's doors after dark and ask for even something as small as just one penny. One penny is not going to help any organization. I had a feeling that he was just trying to make me feel guilty and thinking that if he said "even just a penny" that I would oblige and open my door! I told my Mom today that I am going to go buy myself a security screen door and have it installed because I just don't want to take any chances.

When Chloe flipped out like she did I immediately felt very uneasy about this guy. Colette's barking didn't faze me because that's the way she acts even if it's just a leaf blowing across our yard, but man for Chloe to act the way she did really surprised me and I almost slammed the door in the guys face right then and there when she started barking. So I thank God for my little protectors!

Wow, so creepy. You definitely did the right thing. Tons of red flags and I would have felt very uncomfortable! If you talk to you neighbors often, you might ask them if they encountered him or warn them if they haven't!

Good girl little Chloe!

Default Chi`s Rule!

Dogs and children are a good judge of character.
Did the guy have an ID badge?? At night is a huge red flag.
I think your little ones sensed foul play!

I totally agree...I always trust the natural instincts of my dogs.. If they don't stop after the initial "alert me" barking.., then something is not right. And if they don't like someone I have to start wondering about that person myself.

I'm pretty sure, at least here in Australia, that it's against the law to door knock for donations after the sun has gone down.

It's lucky that you have a couple of great little watch dogs there to warn you about untrustworthy characters

My Becky has always been a great little watch dog, nothing gets past her.
