Default Deciding on New Addition

So it's far away but i'm a huge planner and very picky..pretty sure that's obvious by now eh?

Anyways, I've decided that when I graduate and have my job etc I will be getting Bijoux a companion. Right now between me and my grandmother she isn't often alone for now, but once I move out that will be different so she will need another friend.

I'm trying to decide between a chinese crested -not sure hairless or powderpuff- or a rescue chi.

I've always always wanted a CC but they are not very common in rescues, actually i'm not sure if it's just an Ontario thing but small dogs are not too common in any shelters. So I would be getting an adult from a breeder I'm thinking.

So my other option is a chi rescue through my rescue. This would mean helping a rescue over come emotional issues. which is fine i'm okay with that but if i'm going to be starting my career and Bijoux is already skittish as it..so can I really bring in a rescue that could have issues?

ahhhh so many questions..and my question to you guys. What would you do out of the two scenarios would you get a second dog at all? I want the best for Bijoux and the potential addition and this is down the road but I'm already looking into breeders/rescues @.@

I think that if you decide to get a second dog for sure, and the choice is
between buying or rescuing, go with rescuing. IF you are prepared for possible
behavior or health issues. In my opinion both, a well bred dog and a rescue can
end up with problems, but unfortunately with rescued dogs it happens more
times than not. You do not always know the dog's history, so expect the
unexpected. That being said, nothing is guaranteed with a pure bred either. And
so much depends on how YOU treat your dog. The one thing I know for sure is
that the reward you get for taking in a homeless dog is beyond words. Best of
luck, I know you have a good head on your shoulders and you will make the right
decision for you. You know best. And if that means no second dog at all, then
I'm sure Bijoux will still lead a very happy, healthy and spoiled life with you.

I did not know that B was skittish. I have the same issue with Ruby. She has been classified a Shy/Fearful. She is in a class now but when we are done with this class, we will be working with a behaviorist. They have really suggested (they do classes as well, so not just working an angle good for them) that classes are not best for her at least for now. Agility has now been suggested more than twice for her. We will evaluate after working with this new group and see. Our goal is to learn as much as we can to help her the best we can. She will never be the other girls personality-and we would not want her to be-we just want her to feel calm, safe and confident.

I'd be happy to share any articles and such that I come across or any tips that they share with us.

I am a BIG proponent of two (or more) dogs. Seeing the interaction between my girls is priceless. Eden is a complete random wild child and can annoy the other two but especially in Ruby's case, it is good to force her to adapt to life with others. She would be a mess if it were just us with her. Hope is independent and while she likes to sleep on us, she does not want to be held or be in a sling/carrier. So having all of them sort of covers all my bases!

I cannot recommend one type over another Kat (Kitty & Kahlua) can certainly give you the full detail on having all-Chis, Cresteds, rescues.

I am a planner, too. I think it is just wise. Being prepared is a good thing. It will also help you avoid the "falling for any cute dog" trap.

Just my two cents...

I know you are talking about a future choice but I will
tell you just from what interaction I have with shelters.
A lot of dogs are being surrendered now for economical
reasons and are otherwise healthy and sound dogs.

Sometimes they make me even more sad because I feel
like they never seen it coming

Absolutely, all are good dogs, just some require more work than others.
At our shelters many were abused or neglected, so require extra tlc and patience.
And you are right many are healthy or only have small health issues like fleas, mites, diarrhea, etc.
