Default Dr Jekyll, Mr. Puppy

Bandit has recently started something that has me puzzled. He will be sitting quietly and being his very sweet self. Then out of nowhere he will start snarling and acting like a crazy mean puppy. I can settle him back down if I can grab him and rub between his eyes.

I find this puzzling because he will settle right back into his sweet self. I have yet to figure out what sets him off. I know he is teething - I found a little blood on one of his toys the other day. Is there a chance that when he is done teething he will stop this? Is there something else I can do to get him to stop this?

I never experienced that, but I know he'll be smart enough to figure out if he pulls the "freak out" you'll be there to rub him down ~ they'll play you like a fiddle if you let them

Nope, never experienced that. It doesn't sound like typical pup behaviour, it sounds like something is going on with him, possibly even neurological.

I don't think teething would cause what you're describing. I'd get him checked out at the vet. Don't want to scare you, but unless he's going into full fledged Chi play mode (which sometimes resembles psychosis) it doesn't sound normal at all.

If it's playing and rough housing he's after, then it's nothing out of the ordinary. Diesel can jump up from a sound sleep and snarl and wrestle with the other two.

Am I just misunderstanding what you're describing?

Animals are very sensitive to abnormal forces. A video can help to see what might be going on, but it sure sounds like he's experiencing something. Try not rubbing him when he has an outburst and act like you're ignoring him to see what he does.

I'll try ignoring.

I haven't figured out what sets him off. As near as I can tell he sleeping (or trying to) and then he goes wild. Like something startles him, or he is just plain frightened. The only me I have seen him do something similar is when my brother's dog is trying to play with him. She is so much bigger and likes to chase. He gets tired, she won't let him stop so he gets mad. What he has been doing looks a lot like that, but there is nothing around that I can see.

Emmie did this, but no snarling. She would jump up from a sound sleep and act as if there was something 'chasing' her. Running away, looking over her shoulder. Vet diagnosed 'focal' seizures and she later was diagnosed with 'partial seizures' due to epilepsy. She takes phenobarbital, and is better. Good luck. Sue
