Well for me I had a cat since I was five years which multiplied and now I have six, at the age of 20. However after watching legally blonde when I was about 11 years of age, I decided that if I was going to get a dog it would have a Chihuahua. Although to my luck my mum and grandma hated the idea, even doe thats what I asked for every xmas and birthday I never received one. So I decided for my 20 birthday Diamond would be my birthday present to myself, even doe my mum and grandma hated the idea they love him to bits. My grandma has even gone to length of buying a load of puppia and puppy angel stuff. My mum baby sits him when i'm out at work. They are both considering getting him a small friend to play with later on in the year, probably a Pomeranian or Pug or maybe another Chihuahua .

Good thread, I enjoyed reading all the stories.

As for me I've just always been crazy about dogs, all sizes and shapes,
since I was a young child as long as I could be around them I was happy,
it is still like that today. I had different breeds throughout the years, and
our rescues are of all sizes as well. The thing I like about Chis so much is
not just their convenient size, but their big personalities. They are a lot
of fun, silly but bright, I like that. Funny thing, Chanel doesn't know that
she is small, she wrestles and plays rough with my Basenji boys, she walks
and runs for hours, hikes with hubby for as long as he can, and always stands
tall in face of danger. I think no matter the breed or size any dog can be the
best dog, the best friend, so I would definitely get different breeds down the
line, but I'm also pretty sure Chis will always be a part of my life.

I grew up with average size dogs. My mom breed cocker spaniels when I was little and we've always had cats. We didn't have dogs for a long time after we moved cross country and had to rehome the ones we had. I was originally a cat person as I enjoy furries that can sit in my lap. We one day I was helping out a disabled friend with house work and he showed me the puppies his dog had just had. They were so cute and tiny, kitten sized puppies. I adored the mama and dad, the mama (mini dash) was my favorite. I would play with the puppies while I was there. And somehow I would end up with the same male with a few white hairs on his chest. Well one day I was helping him clean out the playpen that he had the puppies in. We had them out on the grass in a kid play fence. One would follow me when I moved around the yard and whine until I paid attention to it. It was Quinn. I mentioned to my friend that I would love one of the puppies but didnt have the money. We made an agreement that I'd sew him a custom kilt in exchange for Quinn. That long winded story started the madness and now I own 4.

I've had 7 shelties since I was 7 ( now hitting 50-- yikes). Got my first border collie 13 years ago for a change of venue. She is still with me and thriving. My last sheltie passed away a year ago--he was 14. This left a big void in our hearts ( me, hubby, son and our BC). We then fostered a greyhound for a couple months and knew that that wasn't going to be our choice for long term even though they can be sweeties. Since our son will be leaving for college in a year, we thought "travel size" companions would be nice. My hubby has had 2 Chi's prior to our marriage so I suggested giving this breed a look see. He was thrilled! I searched breeders and whala...we now have 4!!!! Love, love, love them. Such a fun bunch. I can see this will probably be our last breed. I love that they can go just about everywhere with us ( the BC gets very upset though if she can't go too, so to keep her happy-- she is the Queen dog after all-- we pick and choose our outings so as to not leave her alone much ).

I love all of your stories!

My mom is a cat person, a HUGE cat person.
She has about 6 cats now and she also fosters
cats. So I was sure that one day my mom would be the crazy cat
lady ( and she still might be ), so I was determined that would
not be me!

One day someone that I worked with brought in this little Chi
and told us that on her lunch she was taking it to the pound
because "she could not be housetrained". Needless to say she
came home with me instead and I had her for 15 years and she
was housetrained within a couple of weeks. We had other dogs but
there was nothing that came close to the bond I had with Gracie.
She died on my pillow in the middle of the day, and she never got
on my bed unless I put her in bed at night.

Before her I had never thought much about Chi's, but she is
what made me love this breed. And who knows...one day
I might be the crazy dog lady

Good thread

Well I've always wanted a dog, but never been allowed one and not known which breed I'd want.
Then, we watched Legally Blonde, and later on, Beverly Hills Chihuahua. And I fell in love with the breed.
When my hamster died last February, mum thought about it and decided I could finally have a dog.
I was very particular with what I wanted. A girl, short haired, and white. I looked for what felt like ages and I couldn't find 'the one'. I almost gave in to a short haired tan boy. Then I found Daisy. She was cream coloured back then, didn't know she'd go so red, but I love it!

I converted. :P

I was a big dog person for a long time. What can I say, I was raised around them. lol I never cared for small breed dogs...at least not until I started working and taking care of them. Still, I preferred large breed dogs over the small ones.

After my 2 large breed dogs passed on my husband said no more big dogs. Actually, he didn't want anymore pets at all, big or small (I on the other hand couldn't bare such a thought, so I started looking around...)

Any ideas my husband had about not getting another dog changed after I got Holly. He just adores her! The kids and I do too, of course! And here I never thought I'd have a Chihuahua! I couldn't stand them when I was growing up! lol
