Shudder! The little sharp shinned hawk was never an issue (too small to be a threat), but once I realized feeding the birds was attracting a larger hawk, I decided to stop. Unfortunately, it hasn't made much difference though, because our neighbors on either side still feed. Now I'm all nervous when I'm out with the dogs. The other night an owl hooted nearby, and I about jumped out of my skin. I scooped up Chica and ran back inside!

I agree!...and it'd be all the more scary with a little 3 pounder! (Chica is 6 lbs).

when I had a tree over my parking spot I bought a big OWL at the local hardward store and put it in the tree... no more poop on my car.....lol.. you have to move it once in awhile or they get used to it....

That artificial owl is a great idea! Once I realized feeding the wild birds was attracting a larger hawk, I decided to stop, but unfortunately it didn't make much difference, since our neighbors on either side still feed. Maybe one of those owls in our tree might deter the hawk though. It's definitely worth a try at least. Thanks for sharing!

Oh, this literally made my heart race and brought tears to my eyes!! I can not even begin to imagine how horrific that must have been for that poor woman (and all the more so for her precious poodle)! :'( Our dogs are always on leash (short leads, not the retractable kind) when we're outside for potty breaks or walks, so it's not like a hawk could take off with them, but still. With their stupid, sharp claws one could cause real injury though. The other night, when I took Chica out for a potty break, an owl hooted nearby and I couldn't hightail it back into the house fast enough!
