Genetics play a roll in coat texture but I have personally found a HUUUUGE difference when feeding raw. Even dogs fed a really nice quality kibble--their coats have nothing on the coats they get after a month or so on Ziwipeak. NOTHING. LOL And this goes for most all premade raws--I think it just happens quicker on ZP because of the vitamins, minerals, fish oils, etc.

Definitely genetics! Just like my human twins-one has fine light brown hair & the other has thick blond hair. The only thing we can improve is the texture & health of the fur with good nutrition & grooming.

Ty all for your help with this I'm so glad that I'm not the only one that has 2 dogs with totally different coat textures. My boys are both beautiful and I'm so lucky to have them.

My mom's chihuahua has a very dense, thick, double coat. It's about an inch long, but he is a smooth coat. My chihuahua Sophie has a smooth, glossy coat, with less than 1/4 length fur that's very short. I notice your Taz is a blue. Most of the blue's I've either had or met have a smooth coat (if they're not suffering from hair loss). The only one I've met that isn't like that is my mom's. The brother of a blue I used to have even had a short glossy coat and he wasn't even blue, just had blue parents! (I didn't know back then that was a nono). So it might be his breeding.
