So we have had Max for 7 or 8 months now and only in the last week or so he has started to jump up on the back of the sofa. Each time we have caught him doing this he has been told off so he knows it's wrong to go up there. Well today I went in the living room to find him stood on the windowsill looking out of the window! (Our windows are quite high up so he has never really seen out of the window in our flat before, it's just a bit higher than the back of the sofa so he's obviously climbed on the back of the sofa then on to the windowsill.)

He got told off but I think we'll be seeing more of this from now on now that he know's what's out the window! Think he thought he was king of the world up there! Think it could be time to re-arrange the living room so he can't get up there as we worry he'll do himself some damage if he slips and falls.

Hi, I had very much the same problem with Bella once she discovered the outside world through the window. The thing was she used to sit there so quietly and seemed to really enjoy just people watching so I felt a bit mean stopping her all the time. I bought some of that anti-slip fabric on a roll that you put under rugs etc and cut it to size to fit on the windowsill, I then strategically placed the pouffe from the sofa underneath and I feel she's quite safe now.

I think its wonderful for the dog! When he's bored, he can jump up and look out at the world. I'd try and get the couch closer to the window sill?? Just think of his state of mind. I wonder if one of those cat 'perches' would be applicable? Work on getting it safe for him. Maybe put something underneath, so if he falls, he won't hurt himself?

Thanks for the replies. We were actually just discussing how we could make it safe for him as I think he would enjoy being able to see outside whenever he wants. My hubby suggested getting a non slip mat for the windowsill and I thought of getting some pillows and putting them down the back of the sofa so if he falls he won't fall too far.. Lisa where did you get the anti slip stuff from? I have seen it before but can't think where would sell it!

We can't really push the sofa any closer to the windowsill as the radiator is in the way but I'm starting to think the setup might work

I agree with Susan. Why don't you make a way for him to sit up there to look out the window. They love to feel the sun coming through the window & see what's going on. I don't blame you for not wanting him to get on the back of the sofa, as this could be dangerous if he falls off. I'm fortunate as my sofa is against a wall, so my chi can't fall off.

I think it is great that you are trying to find a way to make it safe!

Jaxx has started to up on the back of our loveseat and watches outside a lot and he loves it. Sometimes he will sit there for an hour just watching things go by.

Jaxx never really cared to watch outside until recently. I always have the blinds open in the daytime but recently he has started getting up on the back of the loveseat and waiting for me to open the blinds for him. If I don't see him he will make a little whimper sound to tell me he wants to look outside.

Yeah I do feel mean stopping him from looking out if he likes it. It will mean we can never open the window though as we're on the first floor!

I have taken a picture to give you an idea of the height / setup:

What do you think? We were worried because of the radiator being underneath. I have a feeling if he's up there and sees a person, dog or cat then he will start barking as he barks even if he hears a noise outside. Also the windowsill isn't the deepest..
