My partner suggested getting him a friend to play with? I've read a few articles that would suggest chi's are better with company?

Would I be doing the right thing by Ralph getting another one?

Getting Harley to keep Bambi company was the best decision ever. Two is much easier, as well as twice the fun.
I would get a bitch if you already have a dog. not that two dogs won't get on, but the easiest mix that form the closest bonds seem to be opposite sex pairs.

Definitely go with the opposite sex. Just make sure you spay & neuter.
As for whether or not it's a good idea to get a second, only you can
answer that. Take a look at your lifestyle, budget, time, etc.

I've recently gotten a friend for my 6 month old. I had a boy and got a girl. It's quite common that they might not get on well for a couple of weeks but after that they'll be great together. I feel so much better leaving them while I'm in work and such. It's fun seeing them together and cuddling. They play a lot so they get tired out easier.
