LS, your post made me cry! As I can not adopt any new babies right now, I gave a bunch of old blankets, towels, and 3 bags of food that Bailey never ate, some puppy and some Acana she didn't care for. I will be giving them more in the next few weeks. It is the best I can do

You're too sweet - thank you. But I think I'm the one that lucked out to be honest. They're both about as sweet as they come.

I don't think I've ever posted a pic of her. Please excuse the darkness - she's usually a black blur when I take pictures, so this is the best I could do! (Of course, Stella had to make sure she was in the picture as well!)

They are so beautiful. It makes me so sad to see their little expectant faces and their tails wagging because they hope you'll be the one to take them home. I think I'd want to take them all home if I went there. Poor, sweet things.

I have over 20 animals of my own now and so my home is full (I rescue all the time, always have) and the shelter is always so hard..

Both of my dogs and cats are shelter animals.. the cats are out of a high kill shelter in california, we traveled across the country with them when we moved up here. Both of my male rats were shelter animals also, brothers who someone dumped there. They were so confused.. the poor dolls, they are lovely boys. I got them when one of my past rats died to keep the remaining two company (one of the remaining rats was very very old and was expected to go to the bridge soon).

I also have rescues from other places...I've done wild animals for a long time too. It is hard not to help them all, and I'm glad everyone is donating as it does help a lot.

I have to go to shelters fairly often to evaluate dogs that they have contacted us (border collie rescue) about. It is one of the hardest things I have ever done in my life and will ever continue to do. If the dog does not pass the temperament test then we have to turn them down and they will most likely be put to sleep. What is even harder is when the dog is not a border collie but a perfectly nice dog and I have to say no, knowing that contacting us was probably the animal's last hope and that I am sentencing the animal to euthanasia. It breaks my heart and makes me sick inside. Sometimes I have sat in the parking lot and cried.

I have donated more time than stuff to our local shelter. I teach free training classes in an effort to keep dogs from being returned by helping people learn to teach them to be good pets. I walk dogs and spend time giving pets and love. Plus I sit on the board of directors of border collie rescue, am a foster parent, and spend a huge amount of time helping with training, transport, etc that keeps a 501c3 rescue running.

I think sometimes I suffer with some compassion fatigue, it can be hard to keep going day after day when it feel like you can never make a dent in all the animals that need help but I know it makes a world of difference to those dogs that we do help. And we keep on...

Thank you to everyone for all that you give, not just during the holidays but all year 'round to your local shelters and rescues. They really do depend on you to make the animals' lives better!
