During a google search, I came across an article on Cesar Millan's site that was about nail trimming and we followed the advice and we can now cut her nails without incident!
What we did was fill our bath tub high enough that she couldn't stand in the water and then let her swim. The point is to spend some of the dogs energy, and swimming is also great low impact therapy. It also softens their nails so they're easier to cut. When we took her out, she let us trim them. The article suggested putting the dog back in the water a second time (not to the point of them being exhausted though) if they still had issues. We only did this whole exercise once and I'm so glad we did.
