Default Harness styles

So I need to make a harness each for the new girls, but am unsure which style to go for. Neither have been walked on a lead, Mouse isn't even used to wearing a collar, Delilah is more comfortable in a collar but much more anxious when outside. So I want a style that will make them feel secure, and be escape-proof in case they panic.
I can't afford to buy anything right now and I don't sew (apart from straight lines!) so vest types are not an option.
I make them out of very fine nylon webbing, which I have in 1/2", 3/4" and 1" widths. I would usually use the 1/2" for a small dog, but was wondering if using some wider webbing might be better for these girls.
I was thinking either step-in like this:

Or traditional Roman harness like this:

Obviously I can make tweaks so it suits them better. Any suggestions much appreciated.

Thank you Rachel, that is very kind of you. Do you think the vest type would be better for them?

IMO, Honey definately does better with a Vest Harness.

I think it may make them feel safer on the lead aswell, as it kind of covers their body, like a thundershirt, and gives them a hug!

What sizes are the girls? Neck and Chest please.

The step in harness in red is what I use. Easier to put on than some of them that go over the head. Depends on what freaks them out?

My new Chi pulled right out of the first harness you linked. I wouldn't go for that one. He also has no training on a lead. Luckily, we tried it out in the house before going outside.

I did wonder whether the step-ins were escape proof! They don't mind things going over their heads, athough I could put a fastener on the roman style one on the neck, so it wouldn't have to.
I could make a plain figure H, figure 8 or figure X too.

My boy has the step in one that he puts his arms through and it fastens behind his neck. He walks great with it and it doesn't pull his little neck at all and he doesn't freak out from something going over his head. I love the style and would only use this one! It's black and in red writing it says "bad to the bone", cuz he's tough like that
