That's totally freaked me out! Thank god we don't have anything like that here. The worst we have is foxes I suppose. How dreadful, I'd be a nervous wreck. Poor Kay x
I have a large fenced in yard with two bassets that follow my chis when in the yard. I swear they are Pup sitters but I still never let my two little ones out unattended. I am on my deck or in my yard. I am afraid of hawks and turkey vulchers.
A couple years ago (before my chis) a bear was in my town (rare to see them in the city as I live in the DC metro) but I was freaked out it would go in my yard with my hounds and they are dumb enough they would think it is their new bff. A friend of mine who worked for animal control called me for every bear sighting where if it got close I could grab my hounds and force them inside (they hate being inside hence the heated AC dog house). Lucky for me the bear stayed in the opposite side of town then ventured off back into the woods.
So very sad. We don't have much trouble with coyotes, but we have hawks. I never let mine out in the back yard without following every step they take. They stay pretty close together. If I yell Hawk, they all run for the back door. We were out one day and a hawk swooped down just above my head. Scared the life out of me. :/

I saw a coyote right in my side yard. He went into the thicket. I just don't let my chi's out, unless I am right there. Never in the evening though. Thank goodness for pee pads!
I live in Illinois (North Shore suburbs of Chicago) too and last week my spouse said there was a coyote on the front lawn across the street from where we live, which is a plain old subdivision. I've seen hawks in the trees and of course, skunks. I always watch my Chi when he goes out. Right now it's pretty cold for him so he does his business, supervised, quickly and comes back in.
so so very scary!!I have to watch the birds Everyday here!I took my Romeo with me to Titusville beach/Kennedy space center reserve (which I had taken him before several times no issue) fishing/tanning except for 2 years ago I had a HUGE hawk swipe down in SECONDS after my lil buddy!I haven't gone back sense!
This hawk circled me and my little dog while laying in the sun high above us.So I became suspicious.It landed in a tree near by freaking me out and not long after back in the sky it went only seconds later swooping down at me and my dog(Romeo was sunning with me 2 feet away from me or closer!)!Once it was about 4 feet away from me and Romeo.I jumped up screaming waving my hands at it and it did a swoop around ME (I then thought it was gonna attack me for my dog!)It swung around me to land it self right back in the same tree!!!It was so watching and waiting to eat my baby Romeo.So I got out of their and haven't been back sense!
Even now I notice them in the sky and have to call my dogs in.I can never leave them alone in the back yard to run on the acre and be happy for fear of these birds! They horrify me!

I live at Cocoa Beach and thank God... there are VERY few hawks here. Only Osprey, although two days ago I did see a Hawk on base. Osprey are nasty birds too (awesome) but they are primarily fish eaters. If you stand close to the animal, the bird will NEVER come close. They know they would lose a fight with a human (it's their assumption due to our size). If you leave your chi unattended, you might be asking for trouble though around here.. lots of predatory birds.
