Hello all! My name is Jess I am 25 and from Pennsylvania. My husband and I have just made the decision to start breeding Chis. We are huge pet lovers and cannot wait to bring the joy our Tito gives us to other responsible pet lovers. We have our first male and we are in heavy search for the "right female". We have done extensive reading on breeding, especially Chi breeding, spoke with our vet, and even talked with a few local breeders. However there are no local Chi breeders . I am quite eager to learn from you all. We figure if the female we find is a pup, we definately have lots of time to gain as much knowledge as possible!!!

First of all, good luck on your long journey towards becoming a breeder . It is a very demanding tasks that needs a lot of knowledge and research. First you have to buy a good breeding stock that will come from a reputable breeder (that also means traveling a long distance to get it). Good, breeding quality Chihuahuas don't come along that easily.
Next step is finding out whether the puppy you bought is in fact a perfect example of the breed. That you will find out by taking her/him to a dog show where you will also be able to meet and interact with a great number of breeders and other people that will provide even more information.
This is also the place to meet potential studs that will complement your bitch (that means if your female has some not so serious fault - like very fragile or thin legs- you'll get a male with more compact bone structure). Not just the looks, but also studying a pedigree of a stud will be very important. You'll have to study the line of chis your female comes from and the line your stud comes from....... by doing that you and the stud owner will be able to find out whether they are a perfect match..... well, that's in a nut shell , but i'm sure some breeders on this site will have even more information.

I'm happy to hear that you're doing your homework . not many people do unfortunately ...... but since I can see you really put a lot of time into research and studying the whole thing, I wish you all the best. it is hard, but i'm pretty sure just as rewarding when you see the young ones doing well with happy new families .......

Thank you! I was worried that when I joined the breeders thread as a new breeder I would get flamed for wanting to breed. However, I love my pets, they are my children, and will be my only children for awhile. I am a small business owner who works from home. We have the time, the love and the money. Not to mention the nearest Chi breeders are a few hours away. If you want a Chi here you either have to drive for hours or go to a pet store. And I would hate to have people supporting puppymills, when they can have healthier, happier, local pups bred with love!
