To be honest, I think the prices being charged are putting chihuahua ownership out of the reach of many good homes.
Many of the costs Smallbutmighty quoted are items which could be reused again and surely would not be charged for each pup, caesareans are not always necessary either. £120 seems an awful lot of money for feed for a 0-12 week pup, maybe you made a mistake on that.
I honestly think that some of the prices quoted for pups is extortionate - if you are buying a show pup that is one thing, because they are rare enough, a pup who conforms to breed standard in every way.
But for most pet pups it should be a fair price and what that is I am not sure, but to overprice pups and make that seem the norm does seem unfair.

I was thinking that myself Jane.
Surely a blender doesnt have to be bought each time?
Heatpads are reusable too.
I think the care and time should be expected too from any good breeder.
Only cash expenses should be considered.
Just my thoughts.
Afterall it's the breeders choice to breed and they should want to look after mother and pups well anyway.

Please note I am talking about well breed dogs.
Spences..
£250-£350 for a GOOD stud.
£700-£900 for a C-section (quoted by my vet)
£57 per pup for both injections and microchip (I do both) or £25 for first injection.
£120 good quality food (that is the whole time kept. £200 including mums food.)
£20-£50 for heat pad or heat blanket
£45 for whelping kit.
£40-£90 (depending on size) crate.
£45 Blender for weening
£12 for KC Reg Papers per pup
£7 for pedigree per pup
that is only half of the expence!
& if you added labor..
For 2 weeks me and my partner stay up (doing shifts) looking after pups making sure mum doesn't roll over and they are all feeding.
Weening is a nightmare, plus all the attention they need!
I spent 4 months checking my bitches bloodline and the studs.
Also getting used to baths, feet being touched, used to having a tooth brush in there mouth (or finger brush).
I always say "you get what you pay for".

This is my point when people say breeders charge too much!!! They dont see how much effort and love goes into rasing a litter as well as finding homes and expenses on our side too. Another expense is puppy packs and food supplies i usually spend £15-£25 per every puppy in all my litters it takes time to find what they need and you try and take some of the costs yourself even though you know within a 1-2 weeks it will all be chucked away anyway sometimes!

when i was breeding i'd ask all my questions and when we met , if i liked you and everything checked out . i was always willing to give people major discounts , lol many times ciarra called me nuts, crazy and loco for the prices i was giving up pups but in the long run we'd both agree a good home is better than the money i love all the homes that my pups went to

You'd be surprised! The quality of puppy foods are good but v expensive! We use a range from Royal Canin Reproduction starter & Beta Puppy depedning on their stage i.e. teeth, chewing, lapping etc. Some people dont understand how much effort it takes to raise a litter
