I think anything over a £1000 for a pet quality bitch and £800 for a dog is too much, I don't care how well bred. Pet quality is pet quality.

More breeders should perhaps show more interest in finding loving lifetime homes for their unwanted puppies than working out how much it costs them to rear a litter they planned, then passing on the cost to buyers

I generalise here as it's not just some Chihuahua breeders that think like this...

Many of the costs Smallbutmighty quoted are items which could be reused again and surely would not be charged for each pup, caesareans are not always necessary either. £120 seems an awful lot of money for feed for a 0-12 week pup, maybe you made a mistake on that.

I honestly think that some of the prices quoted for pups is extortionate - if you are buying a show pup that is one thing, because they are rare enough, a pup who conforms to breed standard in every way.

But for most pet pups it should be a fair price and what that is I am not sure, but to overprice pups and make that seem the norm does seem unfair.
I agree it just doesn't add up Jane.

And if people really are breeding because they love it or because they want a puppy or so from the litter, they should perhaps be more interested in good homes for their babies than money and recouping their costs.

Just my thoughts...

I agree to a certain point with most of you . ....what I think is that a good quality puppy is worth paying for. I'd definitely pay between £800 - £1100 for a well bred Chihuahua from a reputable breeder that will be there for me and his pup no matter what. A breeder that gives it a lot of thought, a breeder that is also your mentor and a friend. A breeder that cares for his dogs, has a world of knowledge and does all the necessary health checks.
However, 90% of breeders I see on epupz are FAR from that!! In fact, I can't believe they even consider charging as much as they do for a badly bred pup with questionable background...... for most of them, I wouldn't be prepared to pay more than £400. There is an appalling number of so called breeders that charge £1200 and up (different prices for different coat and colours) for a non-registered pup and I'm thinking.... they can't be bothered to even register with KC, I wonder how much thought they put into picking the right stud and checking the health background. Stay away from "breeders" like that and save for a good quality pup. It's worth it!! I travelled to another country for mine and believe me, I am so happy I did. He was exactly what I wanted and even though it cost me a lot of money, I am glad I researched the lines and knew exactly what I will be getting.

hi there, i'm a newbie and have just come across this thread. i have 2 chi's and decided to allow my bitch to mate. this was successful and she is now 53 days pregnant. where i live at the moment, people are asking around £1500 for certain colours, not only that, but asking ridiculous amounts for so called ''miniture'' and ''tea-cup'' chihuahuas. surely the health of the dog is more important! my chi and her babies will recieve the best care and all i am bothered about is covering my costs and ensuring that her babies get the best 'forever' homes.
