What really annoys me is that many people say "you get what you pay for"
Now that is not necessarily true - if you buy a Louis Vuitton handbag from Harrods you get what you pay for - but if you buy a Louis Vuitton handbag from a stall or ebay - you might pay full price but it could be a fake.
Would you pay full price for a chihuahua without checking that the breeder has done all the work a breeder should - certified health checks, travel up and down the country to shows to learn what chihuahua lines are good for breed type but also very importantly for good health, lines that don't have health defects.
Or would you be taken in by a breeder charging full whack and saying "you get what you pay for" implying that because you are paying top dollar that your chihuahua is from the best lines both in breed and in health.
You would research your handbag - so why not research your chihuahua, a little dog that is going to live with you for the next 18 years and for whom you will be paying the vet bills for the 18 years.
I had a Cavalier King Charles for whom we paid top dollar, but unfortunately we didn't research the breeder - we spent thousands on his health care over the years and most importantly he suffered - he suffered from epilepsy, a heart murmer, had two operations on his legs, and ultimately died aged 12 from heart failure - our vet bill for the last 3 months of his life was over €2,500.
So get onto your local kennel club, ask to speak to the person who is the chihuahua representative and they will give you the low down on breeders - they know the good and the bad.
All my opinion of course - but I have learnt
