Default Breeders Are Greedy?!

I have just got off of the phone with a lady who 'thinks' chihuahuas should be £300-£600 although they usually go for.. £800-£1200.
Please note I am talking about well breed dogs.

Spences..

£250-£350 for a GOOD stud.
£700-£900 for a C-section (quoted by my vet)
£57 per pup for both injections and microchip (I do both) or £25 for first injection.
£120 good quality food (that is the whole time kept. £200 including mums food.)
£20-£50 for heat pad or heat blanket
£45 for whelping kit.
£40-£90 (depending on size) crate.
£45 Blender for weening
£12 for KC Reg Papers per pup
£7 for pedigree per pup
that is only half of the expence!

& if you added labor..
For 2 weeks me and my partner stay up (doing shifts) looking after pups making sure mum doesn't roll over and they are all feeding.
Weening is a nightmare, plus all the attention they need!
I spent 4 months checking my bitches bloodline and the studs.
Also getting used to baths, feet being touched, used to having a tooth brush in there mouth (or finger brush).

I always say "you get what you pay for".

i totally agree with you - if they want a dog/puppy for £300 - £600 there gunna have to settle for a dog/puppy who is not from the best of breeders, or looked after as well as they could be. People need to be aware of how much it costs to raise a litter of puppies and all the time and effort that go in to raising them.

I agree but disagree with you. As I'm not or never will be a breeder I don't know how much time and effort or even expense that goes into breeding so you do have a point. The only thing that gets me is say if you have a litter but there are different colours in that litter, I don't think the price should go up by a couple of hundred because it's a certain colour. I'm not saying you do that yourself but when I was after a chi the price would differ from their colour plus there was a big difference in price for long haired to short haired.

The ones that are greedy are the ones that are just out to make money from the dog, they probably don't spend the time and effort you do.

I hope no one takes that the wrong way. It's just my opinion.

i so agree! I've been threw all this . i also would send home over 50$ worth of toys and food ect.. yes because i wanted to but once you add up all that I've spent on the before they've even came lol HALF my money is GONE!!!

i was buying pet beds, toys , blankets, gift bags, cards, chew treats, cd data, dvds of their photos and videos. so my pups went home with alot of nice gifts. i even know a breeder that used to send home a nice training crate and her prices was about 350-800. so no SOME breeders aren't greedy!

I think anything over £1000 is a bit much IMO
I also agree about the colour thing too, have seen that many times, prices much more for a certain colour.
I was lucky cause my breeder charges £800 for any colour or dog no matter what.
Same with Male and female, long or short coat.
Those are well bred dogs.
She also doesnt take deposits, so if you change your mind you dont lose out.
I offered a deposit and she said no, i have promised that dog to you so that is it.
She doesnt do any adervitising either or even have email.
Old fashioned lol and goes from word of mouth.
That was why i waited so long for a pic of Darla it came by snail mail. ha!

There are real mean people out there, that do expect something for nothing, i think to expect £300 to £600 is a bit much.
I have even seen folk wanting pups for free! and doing adverts like that.

another thing too to remember is prices vary from country to country and whatever dog seems to be in fashion at the time, i know when we used to breed akitas if we had a litter and we had certain colours we could have named our price, it was very hard work dealing with 10 pups at a time but it was our choice to breedand we knew what was involved. our male akita is beautiful, but he grew too tall for the breed standard so we stopped. we never charged mad prices and we were guided by the breed club. we still get calls asking for stud services, even tho we never used him as a stud. we only ever charged for a pup, never toys blanket or food that went with them.
sorry this was long

Yes I agree with the colours, a dog should be priced on quality not colour.
BUT it just upsets me when people say oh yer its far to much when really they don't think about what goes on!
