Lightbulb Need ideas on harness velcro.

I've gotten fed up with paying for harnesses that do not fit my chi-peas. Too big in one area and too small in another - ugh!!! Now I'm working on a design of my own. A harness that fits my babies - comfortable, cool for the summer and yet durable and strong. I'm real close with a perfect fit for Dottie (she doesn't mind trying on the patterns - lol).

I wonder how much velcro is really needed for these little guys? And what strength? I think Puppia uses the industrial stuff 'cause I have to tug at it to open. Has anyone ever had a problem where the velcro on a harness came loose from their chi tugging? Do you think one D ring is enough? Some manufacturers use two - I mean most of our dogs weigh less than 10 pounds - where not talking about Pitt Bulls. Any thoughts???

Is this a step in harness that closes around their backs? Those usually have two d-rings with a snap buckle in the middle. I think the two d-rings on those are just so the leash is centered and not off to one side.

The harnesses that you put on their backs and then velcro around the waist and the neck would probably need stronger velcro. However, I doubt that even regular velcro would be pulled off easily by most if any Chi's. They are tiny dogs.

I plan on using snaps for harnesses or clothes that go around the neck and waist. I have tons of snaps, and I don't like how velcro catches on dog sweaters or other things. I may even add a snap buckle around the neck for security, but I think it's overkill for our 4 lb Chi. She walks well on a leash and doesn't pull.

I don't like buying ready made things for our Chi because they all need some kind of altering to make them fit. I might as well make them from scratch because it's easier than taking apart something ready made and then altering it.

My little ones honestly HATE the sound of the Velcro, so I have made all of their harnesses with parachute clips. Since you already have a pattern you are wanting to use, you may not be able to incorporate them into that style, but I find they hold up better with use as well. (No fuzzies or hairs to stick to the velcro). They're not terribly expensive at fabric stores either, I'm sure better if you buy bulk.
Just a thought. Good luck!
