Tomorrow my lil girl who is a Chihuahua/cocker spaniel mix goes to get spayed. Any tips for me since this is the first time I have actually had to have a dog fixed myself? She is 5 months old but I am moving in less then a month to a family members that has 3 intact pitbulls and decided it was safer to have her fixed now instead of shortly after the move. Of course she wont be alone with the pits seeing as they are all 50+ lbs and she is just over 8lbs. I feel most comfortable having her current vet do the procedure before the stressful move north and having to start the process of finding a new vet.
I found a playpen really helpful during the recovery time! That way I didn't have to worry about my girl jumping on the couches, plus she was really sick with diarrhea so it kept that whole mess contained. Just make sure that she stays hydrated and know that it will take a little while for her to get back to herself.
She might be a little cold after the surgery. The anesthesia lowers their body temperature, so I put a heating pad on low under half of Teddy's bed and draped a blanket over him and that seemed to help with the shivering. It'll take a few hours for her to be interested in food/water again, probably. Good luck and don't worry, she'll be fine!
Most dogs do just fine after spay surgery. Keep activity to a minimum, make sure she doesn't lick/bite at her incision and offer pain meds if needed. Make sure she stays warm and hydrated. You can tempt her with some chicken baby food (without onion powder) if she doesn't seem to want to eat at first. Good luck and let us know how it goes!
lots of great advice here. What I did before my girl got spayed was search at the top of the page for "spay" and I found lots of people with the same questions I had, probably you too!
Cricket came home around 5pm and has already started hunting for food and water so I did offer 1/4 her normal evening meal per vets instructions. She has already gone out once to go potty and is now resting in her crate for the night with her pain meds given. I went ahead and got an e-collar while there just in case it is needed but so far shes just tired and cold. I have the hard plastic crate with a light blanket over and lots of blankets inside to keep her warm for the night. She goes back in 14 days for her follow up
