Default Excessive Shedding

Hi all

I know you've probably had this question several times before...

Milo seems to shed fur like crazy. He's a shortcoat. I will vacuum the rug, sofa, etc and within minutes it will all be covered with hair again.

I don't feed him a raw diet but I do feed a high quality kibble. I was feeding Eden but his stomach didn't seem to agree with it so I switched him to Canagan. I was speaking to a girl at the weekend who has a french bulldog - she gives him salmon oil and believes this helps with his shedding. What are your views??

It's not like he seems to be losing fur and going bald, I just don't know how he can shed so much and still have fur left on him!

Do you have any suggestions as to help this or what could be causing it?

Thanks

I give Salmon Oil to Kody and Chico, it seems to help their coats but I am not sure about the shedding ... I use the 'Furminator' on both of them, usually 2-3 times a week... they love to get brushed..........

Salmon oil helps with skin and fur quality and I think it would help with shedding too. Also, brushing every day helps too.

As far as reasons why he's shedding, it could be one of many things. It could be allergies. Or seasonal shedding. Or he's just a shedder.

He is likely just a shedder, but it could be allergies too as stated above. My Pip is the same way, he's a short coat, but he has a thick double coat and he sheds a lot. He eats a high quality diet, but he does have allergies, although they are minimal now. I think he simply sheds a lot. What helps for me is using a zoom groom, which is a rubber type brush that grabs the loose hair easily. It's this, if you are not familiar.

If you use this daily to remove loose fur and then give a brushing afterward it should cut down on the shedding quite a lot. A bath also helps, but I generally don't do that all that much.

I can't really comment as I haven't tried it yet, but I was planning to buy salmon oil too for Lilo. Since it helps with skin and hair, I suspect it should/could help with shedding too. It's worth a try.

I recently had to take my mom's cat into the vet because she was shedding so much. It's normal for dogs and cats to shed, but if it's an outrageous amount and came on suddenly, might not be a bad idea to get a blood panel done to rule out any health issues. Oil definitely does help with a healthy coat.

The vet determined in kitty's case that she was healthy, but the hair on her rear side was very coarse. The coarser hair sheds more easily. He gave us oil packets that we apply on her neck and they have helped tremendously!

Thanks everyone. I don't brush him half as much as I probably should - he hates it and he hates being bathed. I have however just given him a bath. He is now sulking....

I do worry about him so much! It probably is is just seasonal. We had a freakishly hot bout of weather here recently, and that's when he started shedding like crazy so I'm probably over worrying. I'll try salmon oil, more baths and brushing and go from there.

You lot are amazing thank you!

Aww what a great picture. Poor thing he looks like he's hating it, but so cute at the same time. The shedding could very well be due to the heat we had, especially if it started around that time so I'd say it's probably seasonal.
