I think he's used to teaching competitive obedience from what it sounds like. That's how you train for obedience competitions. Holding the leash in your right hand and letting it loop across your body allows the dog to cue in to your body language instead of being "led" by the lead. This is normal training for competitive obedience training. The dog will stay in the left side heel position at all times and watch your body and leg to keep himself there.
Nothing wrong with that. Actually holding the leash in the right hand, which gives you less control at first, encourages the dog to learn what "heel" means and leads to reliable off leash work. The leash should be LOOSE. Your leg will make the correction if he is lagging or forging.
