I would end up tripping over the leash, if I held it like that. Lol. I am a klutz.

That is exactly the problem , especially with a six foot leash, you need to use the left hand to hold it up. Now other trainers tell you to hold in right and use left as a guide.

Yeah that just seems awkward to me. Did he explain why you must have a 6-ft leash? Maybe for recall training.

If I understand right to give them plenty of room to walk, but a large dog would need a six foot leash, but why would a four pound one need that?

I think he's used to teaching competitive obedience from what it sounds like. That's how you train for obedience competitions. Holding the leash in your right hand and letting it loop across your body allows the dog to cue in to your body language instead of being "led" by the lead. This is normal training for competitive obedience training. The dog will stay in the left side heel position at all times and watch your body and leg to keep himself there.

Nothing wrong with that. Actually holding the leash in the right hand, which gives you less control at first, encourages the dog to learn what "heel" means and leads to reliable off leash work. The leash should be LOOSE. Your leg will make the correction if he is lagging or forging.

Thanks for that info, we stuck with the collar , although I had the harness on him, he said I could do what I wanted , but assured me I would have to yank really hard to hurt Cubbie. But with the harness I can tie him tight to the seat belt, so it isn't a total waste of my money, I also can clip his service dog tag to it.
Cubbie sits almost immediatly now without tugging. Today we worked on laying down. He does not like that. I also had to buy a six foot leash. Wow this is costing me as much as my jewelry hobby used to. LOL

Puppia harness only when we got out anywhere.
In the yard I use a light weight fabric choke
collar. Just for the quick in and out potty trips.
