I've always been told a harness is better for a chi. But my trainer prefers a collar only. It works, but I have tried Cubbie with his harness and it seems to work too. I just hate the pulling at his little neck. What have you all heard if you have done a training class. He also says only hold with right hand the leash, no touching with left. Yet some trainers teach holding with right and leading with left. That seems more natural to me. And a six foot leash seems too long for my 4 lb chi. But that is what he suggested.

I used to have a collar with Cookie and Benny but with Lola I use a harness to walk her. I now prefer the harness.

I use both. Depends on if she pulls and where we are. The park is harness only on the long lead... the collar is for when she acts a twit while being walked... cause she ONLY does that when on the harness.

I don't use collars with a leash. One wrong move and the injury is done. The trainer wanted me to put a collar on my Bichon when we went to an obedience class. I told her he doesn't wear a collar and just left it at that. She didn't insist. If she had, I would have left the class. He was used to wearing a harness, not a collar, and he did great in the class. I will be taking my Chi to the same trainer if we go to an obedience class and I won't put a collar on my Chi with a leash either. She's used to a harness and I won't take a chance on hurting her. If the trainer insists on using a collar and uses some kind of jerk for a training correction, I would re-think taking an obedience class with that trainer. A little tug on the harness will accomplish the same thing and can't hurt the dog. You are responsible for the safety of your dog and don't have to accept everything a trainer says as gospel. Cesar Milan is very popular and has tons of people who believe he's the greatest, but he does some things I would never do with one of my dogs. If you don't think it's safe or good for your dog, don't do it!

I use a collar now, I bought Rico an XS Puppia harness, the breeder suggested but he is too little right now to use that.
