Default puppy weight ?..help!

hi, ok i just got a female chihuhua puppy a month ago. My breeder told me she wouldnt get over 4.5 ibs. Well when i took her to the vet a day after i got her she was weighed in at 1ib 6oz at 11wks. The vet at looking at her even thought she was younger than that. Going by the chihuahua weight chart she was due to be about 4-4.5 ibs full grown. Well i just got back from the vet today and she is now 14 and a half wks and she weighs 3ibs 5oz and the weight chart is reading for her to be 6ibs grown. The vet predicted (a diff vet this time, the other was out) is saying she thinks she will get to 6 or 7ibs!!! Now how could this be so? its strange and im hoping she just did almost all her growing in this last month, if thats even possible, i was wondering if anyone had any ideas or experiences with the same situation. Also her ears arent up yet, they have raised some since we first got her, but is there a way to MAKE them stand up? just wondering. ANY advise or help would be great!!! thanks

You can't really predict the size a chi will be, so your breeder's prediction was probably wrong. It could even be possible that she exaggerated how small she would be because a lot of people tend to want chis on the small side (not saying that is what happened, but you never know). I'm not sure what the problem would be if she ended up be 6-7 lbs? Mine is almost 5 lbs, and she is tiny, so 6-7 lbs wouldn't really be huge or anything. As for the weight chart, I found that my chi's weight totally matched what the chart predicted, but that is not always the case for everyone. It is really just an estimate. As I said, you can never truly predict the size.

welcome

i agree with all that nicole has said

you can never tell exactly how much a chi will weigh.... what's the problem if she weighs 4 or 6 pounds

You can never tell....Gizmo should weigh 5-5 1/2 according to the charts...his mom and dad each weighed 7 pounds...but Gizmo came out a little smaller...but, he grew alot these last couple of days...so he might just get to the 6 pound mark! his little sister who was the runt of the litter from what the breeder told me, weighs almost 6 pounds at 5 months....and she was tiny tiny!!

I prefer the bigger ones as my hubby is a big guy...LOL...

but if Giz was smaller/bigger it wouldn't matter...same thing with the ears...Gizmo's stood up fully at 4 months...some do, some don't....don't worry about it too much....

As I always say "as long as your baby is healthy" that's all that matters right?

Marcus weighed 1.9 pounds at 10 weeks and 2.2 pounds at 12 weeks, which should have put him in the 4-4.5 pound range grown. At 18 weeks though he had zoomed to 4.2 pounds and it looked like he was going to get much bigger than expected (which would have been fine) but then he leveled off and now at 9 months he is 4.5 pounds and holding there.

I was told that Tansy should be 5-6 pounds when I got her. At 8 weeks she was 2.7 pounds, and at 11 weeks was 3.8 pounds! Since the charts I've seen don't go that high, I guessed she should hit 7-8 maybe 9 pounds. I was disappointed, but not with her. She seems to be a lot more sturdy and less fragile than most chi puppies, so I'm happy with her. Also her personality is perfect, and that does help a lot. But yes it is disappointing to be told one thing, shell out a ton of money, and then realize later you got something completely different. Tansy's personality and good health do more than make up for it though IMO.

I feel exactly the same way. I was told Jasmine would be in the 3-4 lb range - she was the runt of the litter. She is now almost 10 months old and weighs a little over 5 lbs. I could care less - she is extremely healthy and has a great personality, and that is all that matters to me.

If your chi-baby is healthy and happy, that is what is most important.
