Default scared chihuahua?

Hi,

Just wondering if anyone else here has had trouble with a chihuahua being pretty much terrified of new people.

It takes my chi 2-3 days to decide she likes someone, and then she adores them. But until that point, she hides under the couch or in her crate or anywhere she can fit.

She is wonderful and smart other than this, I just was wondering if it was common for chihuahuas to be this way. My girl is 7.5 months old and I got her when she was 4.5 months old. She came from a wonderful breeder that I trust, and my puppy was handled daily by new people so why is she so scared and will she grow out of it?

Part of me doesn't care...she likes me best! but I also think feeling scared all the time when there is someone new is horrible!

Welcome to the board

Yes, if not socialized properly than can have fear issues and/or it can just be in her disposition?

Try using a lot of treats and cuddles. Allow new people to give her treats so she will realize meeting new people is fun. Once she realizes that the treats are nice then make sure when she is comfortable that they give her lots of loving Also do not coddle her when she is afraid and try not to stress about it yourself as she can sense this and it can make the behavior worse.

I think they are naturally cautious around new people. Cant say I blame them, it must be like giants coming at you!!
At least she does warm up to people eventually.

we have this problem anytime anyone comes into the house with tallulah. as soon as she hears the door go, she barks aggressivley (sp!?) and when she sees them she cowers and is very timid. she acts frightened. i started picking her up to stop the barking, and probably (from fear) she may snap at people, but, i know this can only make it worse. after a few meets, she is ok, still has the odd bark etc. when any1 comes in, i have treats by the door and have asked them to get a few for the dogs and say hello, feed them all a treat and then ignore her. this seems to work, so far, except i will have to stop having so many visitors as the dogs are getting plumper!!! xx

Most of my boys are scared of new people but after a few vists they will go to them we put them in their beds/crate when people come over because the will nip or bite at them but after a while you can let them out and they are fine.Till the people try to leave and they don't like that.
