Lizzy is not due for about 5 more days, is it safe for her to whelp this early? Years ago I used to breed Boston Terriers, and never had one go this early, especially on their first litter. Even after all my experience with them, Lizzy has had me nervous the entire pregnancy.

She is two years old and this is her first litter. Last night her temp was down, but it is back up this morning. She refused her breakfast, even after warming it up and trying to hand feed her which usually works (She is very spoiled). She also seems to be quite restless this morning, yet wants to stay right with me.

What day is she on? There is no set "due date" for Chi's. Typically you count 65 days from the time of the first tie & know they should arrive sometime in the week before day 65. Mari whelped at day 61. I know of someone who's Chi whelps on day 59. Usually after day 56 it's ok for them to give birth. But with Chi's you just have to be prepared in case they don't have a strong suckle reflex yet.

She was indeed ready to whelp, and did so very quickly. She is now the proud mommy to two girls and a boy. Three babies for her first litter! They all seem to be doing well, I am a little concerned that moms nipples aren't filling with milk very well, but I was able to squeeze some milk out so I guess they are ok. I will watch closely to make sure.
