Question My new puppy is 'NATURALLY REARED'...

So I finally found my dream Chi...
Here's a picture...I have named him Gir. Yes, like 'Grr'.
(It's a character off Invader Zim, something most older people wouldn't know about, LOL)

I've been excited for WEEKS and Fox gets a lifetime bestfriend in a week or so!

He's CKC registered and his mother has her championship.
The breeder is keeping him until he's 12 weeks old (Jan 6th) because he is a really tiny little guy. He's in the 3lb range at maturity.

So everything is good so far except one thing.
He's a 'naturally reared' puppy.

The breeder doesn't believe in vaccinations or kibble.
He's been eating pre-packaged RAW food since 3 weeks old.

Now I agree about the whole over-vaccination problem and so on but my main concern is Parvo...
Also, I have never fed RAW food before. Fox is on premium grain-free food but RAW is another thing altogether.

I'm willing to keep the RAW diet, as I've heard nothing but good things about it and I'll probably even switch Fox to it but I am a newb to it all.

Any thoughts on what I should do?

Vaccinations are a tricky thing. Basically you have to read up & make a decision your comfortable with. For me, I believe in MINIMALLY vaccinating. That way your dog is protected against the major diseases that are more common but you're not over vaccinating either. Basically my puppies will get their Parvo/Distemper puppy series, rabies at 6mo (or as long as I can hold off), then a 1yr Parvo/Distemper & a 3yr rabies one year after the first. After that, my dogs get their rabies vaccination every 3 years per our state law. But they will be getting parvo/distemper titers every 3 years as well & as long as their immunity to those is good no more parvo/distemper vacs.

We also feed raw...premades mostly now with occasionally boney meals. We raised a litter of puppies on raw premades (and some chicken) & they're almost 1yr old now & still on premades & are thriving very well.

Anyway, good luck with your new baby. He is very sweet.

I also believe in MINIMAL vaccinations. I wouldn't go with none at all. You can google Dr. Dodds vaccination protocol. It's a great one to go by.

As for raw - YAY! Ask the breeder for a detailed record of what she feeds. She should be willing to share her protocol for puppies. Then just continue feeding how she was. It's not hard once you get going on it. But I would definitely let the breeder explain to you exactly HOW and WHAT to feed your new puppy.

What an adorable little guy and congratulations! I'm perplexed at your post about a breeder that doesn't believe in vaccinations. And she shows her dogs? Parvo is very real and really kills dogs. She could have all her dogs wiped out if any of them contract it! Also, if for any reason a dog should bite a person without a rabies vaccine, the dog would have to quaranteened for 10 days that comes with a hefty pricetag! I agree, minimally vaccinate, but please be sure that you do. If the pup doesn't come to you until 12 weeks, get one immediately, then another at 16 weeks. That is generally when the rabies is given also, but I do know that sometimes people wait a little on that one for various reasons.

I love Invader Zim! And I am an old fart! Gir is beautiful. I would suggest at least puppy shots and at least one rabies shot depending of your countries requirements.
