Default What's your exercise regieme?

Hi All,

Thought I would ask what everyone's exercise regieme is with their Chi/Chis?

I only have puppies so I'm interested to know how different adult Chi's energy levels are and also what you guys do in summer vs winter.

I have a 5 month old and a 15 week old. On work days we do a 15-20 minute lap of the neighbourhood in the morning (some days we're slower as they don't like to walk in the cold) and a 20-30 minute walk in the park with some off leash time in the evening. If it's raining we just play fetch indoors but little Chloe is quite lazy and tends to just want to sit in my lap and watch Axle fetch. On weekends we tend to do just 1 longer walk per day of 45 mins+. Sometimes Chloe will need to be carried for 5 mins to have a rest but she lets me know when she wants to be down again so she can play and explore.

I have a huge backyard. I just let them into it three times a day and they all exercise themselves.

Hubby gets up at 4am to take out Chanel on a on-leash walk/run for 40minutes.
Then during lunch time at 12, Chanel is walked 30 minutes.
At 4:30pm she's walked 1.5 hours.
And at 8pm she's walked 1.5 hours.

Once she's fully grown and stronger she'll go on for longer like my Basenji boys, which is for a total of 6-7 hours per day.

We also play and train a lot at home.

I am a firm believer in exercise and good nutrition. A tired dog is a happy dog.
I don't see the Chihuahua as an accessory or toy or anything like that, she's treated as a big girl and she loves it.

Wow, Chanel is one fit girl! Totally agree that a tired dog is a good dog. My house will be destroyed when I get home tonight because we skipped this morning's walk due to rain.
People don't belive me that 1kg 15 week old Chloe happily walks for 2km but i've worked her up to it from just up and down the driveway at 8 weeks old and now she's fit. It has helped with her weight too as she gave a whole new meaning to 'puppy fat' when we got her - she was almost double the weight of some of her litter mates and had the same silhouette as the bulldog puppy in her puppy school class (no neck, big pot belly). Now she actually goes in at the hips instead of looking like an overstuffed sausage.

Exactly Sarah, little by little you help build up their endurance. If your dogs have
no medical issues that may slow them down they will be as active as you let
them. All dogs love walks, all dogs love nature, all dogs love bonding time with
their owner. I've never had problems with dogs being destructive in my home,
not with my dogs or my rescues, they are all too tired lol. Playing with each
other also helps and keeping them mentally stimulated with training and games
also plays a huge role.

Your two already look bigger in your avatar, you should post some recent pics, I'd love to see!

wow, LS...you have one fit Chihuahua!! Its worth noting that not all Chihuahuas can manage that much activity.Adam will happily do about 5 miles a day but more then that and he gets grumpy and too tired.

Mine are 3.5yrs and 2.5yrs. We do anything from a 30 min road walk to a 90 min road/field/park walk in the morning.
Then usually a 30 min road walk in the evening, although if my mind wanders it can be an hour!!LOL
Sometimes we go out for a long walk (so 3-4 hours) but then we cut back the exercise the next day.

It always amazes me that people think Chihuahuas can barely manage to walk to the end of their block without collapsing!

hahha.. well you are not alone my friend!! LOL

I let mine out into the fenced in area 2x a day for about an hour. I take my laptop and my coffee and sit on the carport and watch them. We do walks on the weekends but they are short just for somewhere different for the chis to go.

All the best parts of childhood are right there with wagging tails.

Anyone who ever wondered if I was crazy lost all doubt once they saw me with 5 chihuahuas in clothes!!
