Default First Dog!

I just adopted a short haired chi! He's about 8 pounds and ADORABLE I was planning on feeding him two meals a day but he didn't really seem to care for food or treats. Its only been a few hours so I expect nervousness, what do I do if he doesn't want to eat in the evening? Also, what's a good time to wake up to let the dog eliminate? I'm sure there's no "set" time or anything but I wanna know when I should plan on waking up. He is almost 3 years old

Congratulations! He is adorable. I wouldn't worry if he doesn't eat right away. Like you said he is probably getting used to his surroundings. I would offer morning and evening or if it's kibble I don't see why you can't leave it down until he gets used to hi surroundings. I can't help you with taking him out. My Lulu is trained to a puppy pad so she goes when she wants to and I never pay attention to when--just change the pad once or twice a day. Welcome to CP.

He's so cute! Thank you for adopting him. Welcome to CP. I free feed, so whenever they are hungry, they eat. Leave it down until he decides to eat, once he gets comfortable, you can put him on a schedule if you want. And he's is old enough to hold it the entire night until you decide to get up. Just be sure to potty him before bedtime. And as soon as you wake up.

I totally agree with SVDREAMER! Start a good routine right off the bat with him. Don't get up to take him out in the night if he's not asking or he'll expect you to do it every night.

Welcome to the forum and to doggie ownership.

Dogs like routines. Give some thought to how you want things to be long-term, then train to that. By 3 years, the dog can hold for a long time. If he's in the bed or room with you, he'll get used to your regular habits.

Since he is new to your house, you might need to restrict his ability to 'hide in a corner' and go. You need to clearly teach him where he should go potty, and reinforce that information for awhile.

I agree with the others--set a routine and stick to it. They really do respond to routines.
