Default Crate Training Chis

Are the steps you take to create train an adult chi (almost 3 years old) any different than training another kind of dog or a puppy? My lil guy will stay in without hassle if I put him into a crate but he gives me the puppy dog eyes so I don't think he's crazy about it. I have a comfy mat in there, snacks and water so he's got what he needs and he sleeps a lot anyway. I have the crate with the door opened right now in my room so he can go in if he wants to

Yes it's the same, he might even learn quicker then a puppy!
Starting out with getting him used to the crate at first open is a good idea. Then after he sits in the crate comfortably for a few seconds close the door. If he cries do NOT open it, don't open it unless he is calm and quiet.
I really wouldn't leave food or water in the crate... the more he eats or drinks the more he will need to go poo and pee!! Take his food and water away about 3 hours before you go to bed!
Good luck!

the lil guy is making the saddest sounds, how can I make it a positive experience and have him not think its a bad thing if he's whining. Whenever I do something he doesn't like he starts thinking it's a punishment, puts his head down in shame and tucks his tail between his legs

Try putting a treat in the crate before closing the door. Put his fav toy in there as well. make sure that you give that positive association to the crate Good luck! I was able to crate train a 1 year old chi that I got so I'm sure a 3 yo can learn too

The big problem is he isn't too into toys or treats, which makes crate training (among other things) a lot harder to do.

Have you tried a puppy sized Kong with peanut butter in it? I have yet to meet a chi that doesn't like that... what about an old tshirt you've worn that you could put in there as well that could help too.
With each new pup I get I put their crate next to my bed at first until they get used to it. Just brainstorming some ideas here
