Both my husband and I work, and thankfully our shifts usually work out so one person is home with Odie most of the day, but sometimes it just doesn't work out that way and she's home alone all day. I will usually spend my lunch break driving all the way home to give her a little walk outside and spend some time with her, but I know that she would be totally fine if I didn't. Whenever I come home, she's sound asleep.

I think that if I were in your situation, I would look for a pair of adult chis that are already house trained or trained to go on pee pads. It's difficult (but not impossible) to train puppies if you're not around a lot of the time.

I completely agree with what Karen said. I don't see how just because someone has a job they can't have a dog. Most people have jobs. That's how they can care for their pets. I work 12-13 hour shifts 3 times a week. My boyfriend leaves for work around 8 and gets home at 5:30-6. So, typically Chloe doesn't have to stay by herself the whole time I'm at work unless Trevor is out of town. I feel lucky that Chloe is only left 2-3 times a week depending on if I work the weekend or not. Since Trevor works Monday-Friday.

I got Chloe when I finished school. So I had 3 weeks between finishing school and starting work. Trevor came home for lunch the first couple of weeks. We kept her in a playpen at first. Then she got upgraded to the kitchen blocked off until we trusted her to have run of the apartment. I think you should definitely pad train of you're going to be gone most of tr day though.

Didn't expect so many responses! Thanks a lot!

It's a bit of a mixed bag really, really helpful though.
Our friends that live at the bottom of our road(2 minute walk) are wanting to get one as well, which would maybe solve the being alone for so long issue. But it could lead to other problems, like who's house to leave them at and then what if they both get more used to one house it would be unfair to shift them about all the time. Regardless, I'm not jumping into anything.

I've suggested waiting until the summer when my girlfriend has 7 weeks off to train the pup and get it comfortable in the house. But again, if we do that, and at the end of the 7 weeks we start disappearing for 8/9 hours a day it's not going to be helpful.

Anyway, lots to think about. I appreciate all your feedback.

Oh you can expect lots of responses on this forum! I hope you stick about. We don't get many men and I'm sure Joe will enjoy the company. Is your friend home during the day? I don't think dogs get that attached to places, more so to people. If they spend all evening with you and all weekend and you give them their food, training and boundaries then it doesn't matter where they are or who they're with during the day, they will love and be bonded to you. My two go to my sister's on a Friday because I do a double shift and my OH often stays in work until at least 6.30 and they adore my sister and her family but at the end of the day they're stupidly excited to see me. Maybe if you could take a week off to get your pup settled you'd be ok. If your friend works can one of you stop by to feed the dogs mid day while they're still little?

Let us know what you decide xox

My husband and I can be gone anywhere from 8 hours to 12+ hours due to work. That is why we wanted to make sure we had two to keep each other company. They have potty pads inside, free range food, water, lots of toys, and bones and they are gated off in our kitchen when we are not there. They do not have an issue at all. When we get home it is yard time to run with our big dogs and burn off any energy then snuggle and play time. By 10 pm they are ready for a cookie and bed. They are very happy! In fact on days that we are off (non weekends) they will go lay in their bed and look at us begging us to go to work where they can take their daily naps!

Our friends are in the same situation as us really. The guy is a barber though so he does have a Monday off. But the girl is a primary teacher as well and the hours are a lot.

I'm going to talk it over tonight more with my gf. We really, really want a chihuahua. But we don't want to be doing the wrong things.

I'll stick around, hopefully get some pictures of our new addition posted in the not so distant future.

I have personnally witnessed the difference in having one dog and having 2 dogs.....I work and commute for most of the day and will never have just one Chi again.... mine have the run of the house while I am gone..... there is a webcam setup so I can watch them from work... most of the day they sleep so I dont' think they miiss me too much...lol... I do give them 'down on the floor' 'eye-level' playtime when I get home...

Sounds brilliant!

I just need to find out where to get one(maybe two now, will see how the misses reacts) because I have no idea. I've googled chihuahuas in London, but I don't trust a lot of the sites. Maybe I am being overly cautious, but I did try last Xmas and was nearly stung by a conman. He got both barrels over the phone when I found out.
