I have let Bella off in a safe fenced in doggy area at a nice caravan park we were at but I wouldn't anywhere else, no way.

My hounds nor chis are never off leash unless in a secure fenced in enclosure (dog park, fenced yard etc) Too many risk esp with scent hounds.

I only let Roxie go off lead when we're out in the countryside and there's no one else around or to dog parks where there's a separate fenced area for small dogs. When we're out in the countryside, I'm on a property all to ourselves, so no random dogs or people will show up.

Her recall isn't 100% foolproof - eg: I might have to call her 3 times instead of one - but she's usually right by my side anyway.


I never let Roxie off lead on a normal basis, though.

Mine walk off leash in my neighborhood. Never have had a problem. I end up carrying Holly halfway since she gets out of breath easily due to her not having enough good blood circulating in her body due to her heart. But otherwise they stay by my side and never run off even after the roaming cats.

I have let mine out without leashes, but no more. Neighbor saw a fox trotting by the other day. Also there are hawks around. Bonnie is only 3.5#'s, and she could be taken away too fast. I do have 2 exercise pens together outside, but the dogs really don't like them.

It's the same here. The coyotes prey on cats and the hawks take dogs much bigger than a chi (an eagle got one awhile ago and I think it was a maltese x). Wolves have attacked dogs on leash and someone even had their off leash dog stolen on a walk when a van stopped and grabbed it! Horrifying.

The only time my puppies walk off leash is at my in-laws garden, it's big and have high walls all around.
They have fun running around and chasing each other, but I always keep my eyes on them.
