I have recently switched Crackers from Hills Science Diet to 4health Small Bites. He also gets a raw egg just about every night. He has been shedding like crazy ( more then I have ever seen a dog shed in my life, and I was under the impression that short hair Chis don't shed as much as long hair Chis or shed very much in general.) I was wondering when I might see a difference in his coat? He's been on 4health just about a week. Thanks so much!

Hi & welcome - re shedding, it's actually the other way around.

I'm not familiar with the food you switched to so can only go on my experience with ZiwiPeak in which case I noticed a massive difference to every aspect of the dogs' wellbeing within about 10 days - 2 weeks, every aspect meaning breath, body odour, incredible silkiness & coat gleaming, tiny solid stools, and virtually nil hair loss etc. It's my understanding that short hair Chis shed constantly, whereas long coats are more seasonal.

Yikes, no way on god's green earth would I feed a Chi an egg a day, and nor do I feed the white. Mine get a yoke divided between 4 on av. once a week.

I didn't realize I was doing something wrong with the egg. he seems to really enjoy it and I've researched online and everywhere I looked said it was okay. Thank you for your answer.

Dee, 4health is a diamond brand food. I personally wouldn't feed it, but there are much worse out there.

As far as shedding, when I changed Toby's food I noticed that he shed more than usual for about a week during the switch. Then it suddenly stopped. It may not stop completely on 4health though.

There is nothing wrong with egg, it's great for dogs. I wouldn't feed it that often though. Toby usually gets one once every week or ten days.

Short hair Chis generally shed more often than long haired Chis. Long hair Chis shed seasonally while short hair Chis shed all year round. This is of course general.

I used to think the same thing. But actually, the long hair chis don't shed much. The short hair shed a lot. Good nutrition help to improve the shedding.

An update for everyone, I have decided that we would feed ZP. I requested a sample a while back and really like how Crackers is doing on it so I will order more around the first after we get paid.

I think you will be very pleased with the way ZP will help with shedding. Lulu had always shed enough to refur a whole other dog on other dog food. When we started ZP the first time I noticed she wasn't shedding at all. I took her off ZP for a short time and put her on Acana (which is a 5 star dog food) for weight loss, but her shedding started again and her coat got brittle feeling again. I decided to put her back on ZP and cut down some on her portion and increase her excersize because I felt like ZP was the best for her. The shedding stopped again. We'll see what the shedding is like next summer or when/if she blows her coat.
