Do you pet your chi's ears?
Butterbean's eyelids droop in peaceful contentment when I gently rub her ears between my thumbs and forefingers. She doesn't seem to mind, either, if I smooth her ears back as I'm petting her face and head. Sometimes I even gently close my hands around her ears and give a little soft massage. Do any of your chis like this too, or do they prefer to have their ears left alone?

It took a while before mine started wanting tummy rubs. The first time I tried nudging her over onto her back, she looked nervous, so I stopped; I didn't want to subject her to anything that could be interpreted as an "alpha roll" or any other frightening display of dominance. When I'm lying down, she loves to climb up and sit on my chest. That allows me to scritch her back with my fingers and rub her little white chest and tummy with my thumbs. She REALLY likes that. Now, when she's lying down and I start petting her, a lot of times she'll ease over onto her side and raise a forepaw as if to say, "Rub my tummy, please, Daddy?" The more I do it, the more she likes it, and the further over she rolls.

That's what I did, just rubbed their chest until they rolled over on their own to get me to do it more. I scratch behind Mylo's ears and he loves it. I'll have to try the massaging thing. You're so cute with her, bless. I love a man who loves animals and I love ones who aren't afraid to show it even more.

That's great news, it will make your life so much easier when you put ear cleaning fluid in her ears every second bath or so. IME the only time a dog doesn't like it's ears being massaged, even quite firmly, is when there's a problem inside.

There's lots of different solutions available in pet stores and vets carry them too. I think the brands would be different between our countries, but I've usually used Leo Ear Cleaner. It's just a clear fluid with the faintest of odours. I suspect it may have a little alcohol in it too.
It's in a bottle with an adjustable screw top so it will let out a lot or a little in a squirt ... you simple place the nozzle just inside the ear hole or directly over it & squirt - they usually jump & squirm at that because it's a bit of a cold shock for them, and then once you've got it in both ears you simply massage for a few minutes, you'll hear a squishy sound but that's no big deal at all.
You'll find this procedure, if done every couple of months, or even every 2nd bath, keeps their little ears squeaky clean, pretty much odourless and will prevent a build up of wax. If I was to take a babywipe or cotton bud & dig around in their ears, there wouldn't be a mark on either, guaranteed.

Haha--thanks! One of the reasons I started looking for a dog was actually a blogger who really led by example in that regard. I read a lot of political blogs, and one of my favorites, John Cole at Balloon Juice, took in a rescue that he named Lily a few years ago. It wasn't long before he started interrupting his usual political posts with posts about how much he loved Lily. At first it was a little weird and discordant, since he can be very aggressive and acerbic when discussing politics. Some of what he wrote about her seemed, at first, very sappy and sentimental. After a while, though, as he kept it up, it became clear that he really did just love his dog that much and she really added a lot to his life. I came around (along with most of his readership) to seeing the whole thing as awesome and beautiful. Having grown up with almost always one dog or another in the household, it wasn't too much of a stretch for me to start thinking seriously about how much I'd like to have a dog again. The only real criterion in my mind was that I wanted something like what John Cole has with Lily. So I was setting out from the beginning to find a dog I could love this much. Butterbean convinced me almost instantly that she was the one, and everything since then has only confirmed it. She's my little girl!
