Default How Old Is My Chi?

Okay, weird question I know, but do bear with me!

I have a chi, Edie, who is supposed to be 12 weeks old. But there are a few little things that have made me wonder, is she *really* that young?

First thing is her size. She's nearly 5lb (2.25kg), and the vet says she's not overweight at all, she's just big. I've looked around, and 5lb is more like an adult size for some chis! I saw both her parents, and they weren't tiny, but I've looked at a few chi growth charts and Edie is literally off the scale for a 12 week old!

Second, she's smart. I mean, I know we all think our babies are super geniuses , but Edie is seriously quick. She hasn't had a potty training accident for nearly two weeks (I'm using an UgoDog), she knows sit, stay, down, shake and she's getting pretty good at heel, and she only did that puppy biting thing for a couple of days after I got her. I work pretty hard on her training, but she just seems...I dunno...mature, I guess!

Third, she still has a puppy coat, but it's starting to get longer around her ears, and tufts of it seem to be growing out.

Sooooo....what do you guys think? Did the breeder I got her from "underestimate" her age? I don't mind, of course, I love Edie more than anything, but it might be good to know from a health point of view.

Welcome!!! She is so cute!!! I saw the pictures and some videos. She could easily be 3 months, she is just larger. I am not an expert, but 3 months does not seem off..

My girl is also a larger chihuahua and she learned very quickly to do things I taught her. It took me very few times to teach her to sit. I got her when she was 6 weeks and within the first few days she was coming when I called and sitting. These are bright little pups!

Your vet can probably tell you if she is older or not, but Edie does look like she is around 3 months old to me. My girl was about 2.5 kilos at 3 months. Now she is 7 months and is about 4.5 kilos.

Ah, that's so reassuring, thank you! I guess I'm overestimating Edie's intelligence because the dog I grew up with, Kira, really was as thick as two short planks. She never even learned to lie down, no matter how hard she tried.

Some dogs do and some dogs don't

Is she a mix? Could be why the bigger weight as well. What did you vet say about her age they can tell by teeth usually a pretty good estimate in a younger dog.

Some Chis are larger than standard. Maybe she will just be a big girl. Did the vet look at her teeth? Usually that is the best way to get an accurate age. And Chis are smart dogs, at 12 weeks they can do a ton of stuff. I'd have the vet confirm her age if you want a more definite reassurance.
