Jaxx gets lots of exercise every day between long walks and playing inside. He hardly ever barks and never has destroyed anything (well he did chew on my cell phone once but that was my fault for leaving it down and having a "Squeak toy" noise as a notification setting.)
He barks occasionally when he hears a noise but I don't consider that being bad. He barked for the first time when someone came in the house but I think that was because a friend came in without knocking. Whenever he barks I tell him to "settle" and he stops immediately.
Having lots of stimulation when you are away in apartments is good too I think. Such as a KONG filled with their favorite treat.
Toby needs 3-6 hours of walks a day to be happy. During the week he gets about 3 hours total but on the weekends he gets closer to 5-6 hours total. If I can't get home during the day, the pet sitter comes. He is noisy and crazy if I don't physically where him out.
That is my #1 apartment living tip- plenty of exercise. Make sure they are worn out.
My puppy has always been an apartment dog. I live in a sketchy area, so taking her out at night isn't feasible. She is just puppy pad trained. (she actually holds it in on walks, annoyingly enough, until she gets home. I guess she hates "public restrooms" as much as me!)
As for barking, I think your dogs will adjust. Besides town homes are usually bigger right? Chihuahuas are great apartment dogs, mine does fine in a tiny studio as long as I play with her A LOT.
