So I've read that chi's are a stubborn breed, arnie is defo showing this side to his personality.

When it comes to walking we have one main issue. He won't leave the house if he knows its walk time. He sits and refuses to move. The only way we can get him to walk is to carry him away from the house in a vain attempt to confuse him as to where we are. We have had him about a month and a half and for the last month his schedule has not changed, all be it a hectic one it has remained the same. We have tried taking the same route everyday, doesn't like that. Coaxing him out with treats, doesn't like that. Changing the route, doesn't like that. Praising, doesn't like that. There's nothing more frustrating at 5:30am than a stubborn dog that won't move. Once he gets going he loves walking! It's just the initial getting him going that seems to be the problem. I made the fatal mistake this morning of putting him down by his favourite lamppost that he usually goes to on our way home and the next half an hour was pure hell of trying to get him to walk. People must think I'm crazy. In the end I put his lead on the floor and turned my back on him and he came straight to me and started walking fine. I've been racked with guilt all day thinking that he must have thought I was leaving him!!

I am all out of ideas on how to get this stubborn man to walk!

Maybe he just doesn't like the leash? Could you use a small fastener clip.? Some of the fabric stores have smaller clips. Then you could fasten a cord (curtain blind cord) to the clip? It would be less heavy. You could have a 6 foot length or even longer. I have one my roommate made and Bonnie went through puppy class with it.

I had EXACTLY the same problem with Rolo. He would refuse to go out the front door, refuse to walk and had to be carried for about the first 15 mins. Then after a couple of months of that he started making a gagging noise whenever I got him home. Outcome.... I discovered in my total stupidity I hadn't realised he totally hated wearing a collar. Poor little man! I don't think I'd been hurting him but he was probably uncomfortable. I got him a little harness and the change was instant! He's like a different dog and now when I get the buggy out to take my grandson for a walk he goes nuts because he wants to come with us! If your dog hasn't already got a harness I seriously recommend you get one!Attachment 8636

Crackers love to walk, but only with his harness. With the collar I fear that he might pull to hard being crazy and zoomy that he might hurt himself.

He's walked in a harness since we had him. I think I might try a different leash. He's on a retractable one at the moment. We first thought he was afraid of the dark but even walking in daylight he does the same. My MIL looks after him 2 days a week and he does the same for her. I don't want to baby him but equally I don't want to drag him round!

Lol! It's so frustrating coz he stands there getting cold and won't budge. Once we get going he loves it! The first 10 mins of his walk can't be enjoyable as he is being dragged along. People must think I've dognapped him!!

While I wouldn't say my Nacho is stubborn with most things, in fact he is very easy going BUT walking is a different matter too!!
Some days he will walk just fine and quite a distance but most days if I can get him to walk 5 steps I am lucky.'
I have tried coaxing verbally, giving treats etc ugh, nothing...mine likes to walk a certain way too and if I try to deviate he will just sit and won't budge....little devil lol.
Also if we walk somewhere and there is a paved walk way he wants to walk on that as opposed to walking say on the grass yet at home he is more than happy to walk on our grass and grass is not that soft etc.
I have a hundred (well not really a hundred but you get the picture lol) different harness's that I have tried, different leads, you name it......

Sorry I know I am no help but just wanted you to know, you are not alone in this
