Hello I had a question about neutering. The city is enforcing that I either pay the intact permit fee annually for my 6 year old male chihuahua named Plum. Or I will have to neuter him. I am a college student full time for Paramedic and I do not have much money to spare. The low income place said they do not use monitors while the dogs are under and they do not recommend I take him there because of his age. Do any of you know of programs that could help with the price of neutering? I called a full service vet and they want just under 500 dollars to do the surgery there, though I do not have that kind of money! Have any of you had this experience? I am worried about it, Plum is very near and dear to my heart and I couldn't imagine something happening to him! Thank you all! -Jacqueline

When I was looking for low cost places to spay my puppy I did a lot of calling around and searching on google for low cost spay +zip code. Have you tried calling the Spca or the local animal shelter in your area? I know here they have low cost options through them but not sure how safe it would be for an older dog. Their prices were around $80-$103 depending on where I went. Our county even has a free spay/neuter program but there is a long wait list due to funding if you can even qualify.
When you call around to vets ask what their prices include. My first quote from the vet was $300 with all the extras they put into a wellness package. Considering she'd already had all the tests in the wellness package done it drastically dropped the price on her spay not needing it. Her final bill was $130.80 with metacam at home for 3 days for pain and an e-collar just in case she did need it.

There are low cost spay and neuter clinics around the country. Here is one place to start searching.

My regular vet did Percy's neuter for 115$ so I'd call around.

Surprised to hear the low-cost clinic doesn't use any form of monitoring. Can't even think of an excuse for that.

Humane societies neuter old dogs all the time. Was the low cost place you called a humane society or just a low cost clinic? I would call humane societies around and see how much they charge and what their policies are. If you post your metropolitan area, maybe someone from that area can help you.
