my Lola is due her pups anytime now and I was wondering what methods people use to keep the newborns warm enough in this cold weather. her helping box is in my bedroom but it can still be very cold even with the heating on.
The only thing I've ever had to keep warm was a baby squirrel I found that had lost its mum. I put it down the front of my top which was lovely until I discovered it was riddled with fleas! Don't suppose that's a very practical idea for new born pups!
You can get heat mats, Amazon have them,they must be kept warm all the time.This is the one i use for Dottie in the cold weather,it's just a gentle heat when they lay on it.
Years ago, I used a heat lamp that was hung way up and shined on 1/2 of the whelping bed. That way if they got too warm, they wiggled over to the unheated side. But be careful---some of the heat lamps get too warm.

I use Reptile heat lamps in my dog house where it does not burn the hounds and I can regulate them.
I used to breed Shih-tzu's and I used to just put the pups and mom in a draft free spot. The pups will keep each other warm the cold isn't what will hurt them its the drafts keep them in a closet or cupboard and they should be fine
