dogs can not catch it and the best way to get rid is to put conditioner on dry hair and LOTS of it and comb with a nit comb continuesly! and go through with comb daily . good luck! x

Thank you all!! My daughter is 12 and in the 7th grade. She never got lice before in the elementary where it was more common. I don't know how she got it, she may have not even got it from her friend. It could have been mentioned since her and her friend are always bent over stuff with their heads together. They just would have been a bit more cautious, we would not have shunned the child ever! I told the moms of some other kids that visit us often to be aware just in case. Its a pain to have to go through it, plus they will just keep passing them back and forth.

I am very glad that the pup cannot get it. She rarely scratches and boy would she ever scratch with these! Sorry I made some of you itchy!!

When I moved in with a boyfriend his daughters mom forgot to mention to us his daughter had lice and she'd not treated more then the girls hair. I kept itching for a month and kept having my bf check and he swore there were no bugs. Sure enough he came home from work with a bunch of nix and told me he'd found a bug in his hair. I was furious and wanted to strangle his ex wife for not telling us. I have 2 children that ended up having it too. I swear I spent 2 weeks cleaning and treating. I found the nix did nothing for the bugs at all and found online to use listerine (green stuff) and leave it in your hair for 2 hours under a shower cap then rinse and surprise the shower cap was full of dead bugs. After the 2 hours in the listerine I did an hour in olive oil and that helped brush out the rest of the eggs and such. It was a long process but it worked so much better then the nix. Some schools now only send children home with live bugs, if there are eggs the child can return to school (found this out with my daughter).

About 3 months later same dang thing but his daughter warned us and then the kids school had a huge breakout they couldn't get rid of and kept sending home numerous kids. I musta spent $500 treating/cleaning/replacing stuff and I got fed up and called the school board and complained to the point they closed the school for 3 days to do a full fumegation and clear it all out. Sure enough after that there was no more issues.

I started using shampoo/condtioner that contains tea tree oil, peppermint oil, eucalyptus oil, lavender oil, rosemary oil, or Coconut oil since lice seem to detest these. I bought tea tree oil at a health store and put it in my normal shampoo/conditioner even at one point.

A very special person to me got the worst case of lice I have ever seen, assuming from a long stay in a state psychiatric hospital. We did the whole run around with treatments, days and a week went by and we were still dealing with it, strangely the day or so after she took antibiotics for a uti they had all died, a coincidence, not sure but wow, weird! Anyways, it happens, to everyday people, to sick people, to adults, kids, professionals, and so on. It doesnt mean your dirty or gross, so hang in there. Once, my boys got it from playing in the tubes of an indoor playground (imo) because we just moved, they were not in school and we didnt know a soul at the time. Anyhow, my advise is to use a lice comb during or after showers even when they are all died and gone. It's not going to prevent them, but at least if they come back you can get a hold on it asap. When my children were little, I had a sister in law and my neice fly in. When she went back home, she called and said the elementry school was closed, because of head lice, and that she found some on my neice. My daughter was scratching her head, I checked and well la, lice, her and my neice are the same age they were in first grade that year. Had to treat my son also who was only 2 at the tiime. Never even thought of the dog.

I remember as a kid (probably 4th or 5th grade) getting lice. Mom didn't know I had it and we went to get my hair cut and the beautician found it. She stopped my haircut mid way through because of the lice. We went home and treated my hair. The next day the nurse called me into her office to check for lice and I was sent home because she found a dead egg. I remember feeling like there was something wrong with me because I had lice. After working in a preschool and having to check for it often I realized it is just something that happens to kids. We always sent out notices to all the parents though if we ever found lice on even one child.
I agree though the mother should have told you. It is a pain in the rump to deal with but with a lot of kids in one place it is going to happen.
