I have housebroken several fosters and my own puppy and I really don't find it difficult, it just takes a lot of time and patience. First you must have eyes on the dog at ALL times they are not in the crate. Best way is to tie a leash on them and attach it to you. When you see them sniffing like they are about to pee lead them (don't carry them) outside and give them a treat when they go outside. If you can not be watching them, and I mean have your eyes directly on them, put them in a crate. Slowly allow the dog more freedom but if there is even 1 accident it means you went too fast and go back to watching them all the time. Every accident inside reinforces the behavior and sets you back so the goal has to be 0 accidents. I find this to be totally foolproof if you follow it totally as long as the dog didn't come from a puppy mill and hasn't ever been physically punished for going inside. Pet store dogs and dogs scared of peeing in front people are a whole other beast.

Simcha hates the cold and dark, but somehow he has learned that he has to do his business on his evening walk. He urinates sufficiently that he can then go from roughly 8pm till next morning at 8am. We live at 32 degrees North latitude, so at least it doesn't get dark here this time of year till about 530pm. You Brits have it really tough in late December; there at most 8 hours of daylight, so your dogs are dealing with darkness a good portion of the day.

Annie is exactly right! You have to keep your eyes on them CONSTANTLY if they are not crated!

I trained Angel on pee pads first, then this past August I trained him to outside totally! I didn't think I would be successful, but so far he is doing exceptionally well. He will go out around 10pm and won't go again til around 7:30 or 8 in the morning! I don't know how he does it, I can't even go all night without a pee or two! Lol

He still won't let me know when he has to go out, I just make sure I take him out every 3 or 4 hours.
