Hi guy,s merry christmas to you all , and your little guy,s. I was walking Charchi this afternoon and noticed one of his dew claws has turned half way round and has a little blood on it, i have booked an appointment with the vet for in the morning. Should i do anything with it till i see the vet? it doesen,t seem to be worrying him, i remember another dog i had years ago ,had to have them removed, do you think they will do the same to charchi? thanks guy,s-janet.

If he isn't paying attention to it himself then I would just let it be until you get to the vet. If it is broken and turned around they will probably want to remove it. How firmly is the other one on there? If it is not useful to him and likely to also break they will probably want to remove both.

Hi Annie, the other one is fine, do you know if they would do it there and then in the surgery with a local, or have to be knocked out completley for this? If they are going to do 1, they may as well do 2, so this doesen,t happen to the again thanks-janet.

I have had two foster dogs have them removed but both also needed other minor surgeries so they did it completely under. I am not sure if it would be fifferent just doing the dew claws. From what I have heard once one rips the other one is bound to go eventually so you might as well have them both done. That is unless they are a breed that has very usable and attached ones, but chis are not usually like that in my experience.

Also are you sure it is not just the nail broken? If it is they might just be able to cut it really short and send you on your way, the vet will be able to tell I'm sure.

Annie, you were right, i just looked at his foot a while ago , and the nail seemed to be gone. At a closer look it seems the nail has broken off, because there,s a little bit of nail with the quick still in tack, looks like it will grow back again, strange though ,because the whole nail and quick seemed to be turned half way round. So the longer part of nail has come off and just left a little bit nail with all the quick. Do you think i should still take him to the vet? it looks ok to me now, but i allway,s wanna do whats right. Thanks Annie- janet.

Yes take him to the vet. With the quick open, infection can get into the nail. Not likely, but possible. The dew claws in adults have bone at their base. Mine that had it done as a rescue had it done when she was spayed. Had a few stitches. She had dew claws on the back feet!

I was going to have Amberleah done when she was spay but when I took her I totally forgot to tell them. I was going in for major surgery too next day so little out of it.
