Hey everyone! With my large dog Boss I got him neutered at 20wks. I was just wondering with Ava being much smaller if I should wait longer? She's 20wks now. How old do you wait for your chis to be before you spay or neuter them?
I got my females over the years done at 6 months, before heat, some say after the first heat. I will be getting Ike neutered at 6 months, so that is 24 weeks old.
Stella was spayed at 8 months, a few weeks after I brought her home. I don't know if she had her first heat, but I don't think so.
Some recommend before the first heat since it eliminates the risk of cancer, others recommend spaying after the first heat so the dog can develop more.
Either way though, a lot of vets seem to wait until the dog is at least 6 months.
Chloe was spayed at 7 months. Small dogs don't typically go into heat until closer to 1 year. So, if you want to spay before the first heat that gives your baby plenty time to gain some weight and be a little more mature. I definitely wouldn't spay before 6 months. I think it's best to wait as long as possible to spay. Especially since she's only 2.3 pounds.
Honey got spayed 3 days ago, she is nearly 13 months. IMO it's better to wait until after the first heat, but everyone thinks differently on this I'm afraid.
I had Bonnie spayed at 7 months and she weighed just 2.9#'s. Ask the vet if they are comfortable with spaying little animals. Kittens are spayed at the shelters at 8 weeks! So are puppies. Not sure about this early neutering/spaying but it is done at the big city shelters all the time.
