My little Hugo has been letting out little growls when I pick him up and bring him close to my face. He is only 6 weeks old and was given to me because we was orphaned, along with his other two brothers and one sister.

He is a very happy puppy, sleeps with me and follows me everywhere. I just don't know why he growls when he is held. Is there any way to help the poor little guy out?

Since he is just a baby, sounds like he's not used to being kissed & loved on. Be patient & talk calmly to him. He'll learn that you're not going to hurt him. He sounds scared. A video would be helpful to see how he's acting.

I think it is just him telling you that he doesn't like being held as LOTS of chi's do not. I would sit down with him, and hold him securely. I have a young chi that is like that. She doesn't growl, but is clearly unhappy. Shakes and trembles a lot. She does alot better when I sit down and let her come to me.
