Hi every one

We are currently in the process of buying our first home/ moving and in these stressful times Gucci is now ill too which is scaring me to death!

Last night I cam home from work and found some spots of diarrhoea (very dark in color) on the floor. I wasn't sure which one of my 3 had the problem, they were all acting normal, running around etc.

When I cleaned the poop from the floor I realised it had blood in it (bright red on the tissue)

This morning I found out it was Gucci, he had diarrhoea again and he vomited (clear fluids)
He kept his tail low and has been cuddling with me and sleeping all morning.
His belly has been rumbling quite a lot too.

I was sooooo scared after googling what it could be, everything looked awful!

I took him to the vets, she was new ( our usual vet was off for new years)
She touched his stomach, checked his gums and took his temperature (the thermometer got bloody too )
She just gave me Pro-Kolin for indigestion and a short course of Stomorgyl an antibiotic.

She wasn't quite clear what could have caused this and just mumbled something about a problem with his lower gastrointestinal tract. I guess she wasn't sure herself?!

She told me to go back after 5 days if the symptoms don't go away.

But I am still worried, I mean what could have been the cause?
What if there is something lodged inside him and he ate something he should have? Or cancer?

Doesn't the vet need to run some other tests?

I feel so helpless!

Is there anything I should look out for or any advice you have for me?

Aw!! Poor Gucci. Hope he gets to feeling better soon. I would definitely feed him itty bitty meals several times a day & give him some pumpkin. You don't want to feed him too much at one time with a sick stomach. I don't have much info to offer, but if you see an increase in blood or if he doesn't look like he's improving in one to two days, I would take him back & have some tests run. Keep us updated! He is definitely in our prayers. Try to keep him calm too as the move might be creating added stress for him.

First of all calm down!!! He can feel your stress too! Second: dogs bleed MUCh more easily than humans do. If they get a virus that upsets the digestive system they can bleed. The vet probably didn't know what caused this! She is treating him symptomatically. I would rest his tummy and give the meds with some baby food if possible, and just a little of that 3-4 times a day. If he is drinking, fine. If not then you should make sure to get some fluids into him. (I gave my pup some honey mixed with pedialyte a couple of times when she was spayed and didn't eat.) Please keep us informed as to how he's doing. Hopefully he'll get better very soon.

Could it be colitis? When Angel was a baby he would eat leaves and it would give him soft, runny stool with a bit of blood in it. LiKe Susan said, give his tummy a rest and see how he does.

I wouldn't worry to much unless the treatment doesn't stop the tummy trouble. It can go on for a few days. But should improve each day. I wouldn't feed anything other than his regular food, but only about half of his normal feeding amount. Bits of boiled chicken and boiled rice (no salt) are okay. Or the chicken meat baby food in small amounts. You want to try to get him to eat a little, as the antibiotic works better with food. Their tummies can be sensitive even when not ill, but when ill feeding foods they aren't used to can just prolong the problem. If you don't see improvement, take him back to the vet. Or if symptoms worsen. Provide plenty of water, and pedialyte is very good for building back up his electrolytes. You can give it to him by syringe every few hours. Get well soon lil guy. Try to stay calm, Mom. I know that isn't easy. Hugs to you both.

Is the red bright red? if so it's lower like the vet says, which is a good thing as if you're getting dark blood would mean more in the stomach or heavy bleeding which would a sign of something more serious.
Sounds like a virus, my dog has had colitis and had goopy poop w/ bright red blood, is it scary! but it was just so sore and inflamed from the constant diarrhoea, he was also put on the prokolin and an antiobiotic course, didn't have the vomiting along with it though.
keep a close eye and do bug the vets if you don't think something is right xx hope he feels better soon, poor baby.

Im a little surprised the vet didnt give fluids and an anti emetic shot. When Pico was ill recently, I boiled chicken breast and then gave him the cooled cooking water in an effort to keep him hydrated. Just a thought.
