Question Eating Question

When I first got Goober, I had gone out and purchased a bag of Blue Buffalo small breed puppy. He seemed to have issues eating the pieces, and wouldnt touch it if I soaked it in water to soften it. After about two days of this, I ran out and got what hes eating now, Pro Plan Toy Breed puppy. I still have the bag of BB double bagged and stored away. Hoping it stays good until he gets a bit bigger and can eat it, as Id prefer him on a healthier diet. But the PP pieces are so tiny, he loves it!

He is 13 weeks old, and I just moved him from free feeding, to 3 portioned meals a day. Today was day three of it. According to the bag, he should be eating around 1/2 a cup of dry a day. I would say its a stretch if hes eating 1/4 a cup between the 3 meals. He also gets a teeny blob of canned Wellness mixed into his meals. Sometimes he eats it all, like this morning, and others he barely eats half before he walks away.

He isnt skinny at all, he feels like a nice weight. Is he eating enough? Does he just know what he wants/needs? Should I break it up farther, into 4 smaller meals? Ive been making sure he doesnt get a surplus of treats, so thats not filling him up. He gets the smallest piece I can manage after going poop outside (which is after he eats anyway) and right before bed, after his last time out he gets his nighty night cookie. And no people food at all.

I just want to make sure I do right by this little man. I adore him.

How much does he weigh currently? Just as a frame of reference, both my adult dogs are under 4 lbs, and each get a total of 1/4 cup of dry kibble a day.

When Angel was a baby, I had to coax him to eat. Occasionally, I would feed him one piece of kibble at a time because I was afraid he wasn't eating enough! Well, now I long for those days! (just kidding) He can't get enough to eat now!!

A lot of owners feed raw to their babies and they seem to do great! I can't do raw, so I give him THK, it's a dehydrated food and also, Wellness Core, but he is 2 years old now and eats "anything!"

A good website to check out is dogfoodadvisor.com. They rate different foods.

Sounds as if he is a good weight. Some dogs will self regulate their food. Some will eat until they explode! My youngest chi, Bonnie, is 3.7 pounds. She eats 1/8th of a quarter scoop., twice a day, and a puppy kong at night. She also gets a denta stix at night. She won't eat too much for her. So she gets 1/4 cup of kibble (NOW) plus a tiny bit in her kong at night. She eats some of the denta stix, but leaves it alone some nights.

If its only the third day theres a good chance he might just not be used to a schedule yet. When I started putting mine on a schedule it took about 2 weeks. She ended up just eating once a day until she got used to the schedule.

I'd smash up the Blue with a hammer before I would feed ProPlan, myself.

I do not know his size but Hope was 1.5 pounds when we brought her home and she was still able to plow through large pieces of kibble.

He is still a puppy so I would offer him a much food as he will eat for a few more weeks. As the others have said, if food is offered and he is hungry he will eat. If not, he will not. I'd only worry if he is super tiny in which case he could have sugar issues if he is not getting food at regular intervals to sustain his glucose level.

Is pro plan Purina? I always cringe at the thought of people feedin their pups supermarket brands. I know some are financially unstable to get the good stuff but its that's not the case I would try other brands. Blue buffalo never worked for me for dex because he wouldn't eat the black bits...and that's the healthy part! I literally tried many many many brands out there...until finally he's set on wellness core reduced fat. It took me 4 years to go thru all the brands lol! As for my pup she eats anythin and everythin they are also free fed and ocassionaly get boiled chicken meals for dinner and even so they eat their own food afterwards before bedtime

Mylo was the same when he was a puppy. Most days he'd eat 2 of his three meals and then every now and then he'd eat more than the recommended. I trusted that he knew when he was hungry and we seem to have done just fine. Some foods vary too...mine used to eat more than recommend of the Ziwipeak and now that I've switched to Eden they eat less than the recommended but seem full and haven't lost weight so I think they're fine.
