How long should you feed your puppy, puppy food? My babies are 7 & 9 months old. Olive, my 7 month old, has been on puppy food since I got her at 8 weeks. I just adopted Angus (the 9 month old) this week. The previous owner did not feed him puppy food at all. Shouldn't he also be eating puppy food? I'm a first time Chi (and dog) owner.

What are you feeding?

There are foods out there such as grain free Orijen and Acana that are suitable for
dogs of all ages. Ziwipeak which is an air dried raw diet is also suitable for any age.
You simply increase feeding amount for puppies.

I've been told puppies should be kept on puppy food until they are a year old before switching to an adult food. I've also been told that puppies on adult food might grow too quickly and would have growth development issues so watch out for his bones. I believe this is mainly a large dog proble m but I don't know if it is an issues for chis as well. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

An all life stages food, like those LS recommended, are good for puppies as well as adults. They are formulated to be adequate for both. The only time I would feed puppy food is if I had a giant breed- their growth rate needs to be slow and they need specific levels of calcium, phosphorus, etc. With our little dogs, I'd recommend a good all life stages food. No need for special "puppy" food. As LS said, you simply feed puppies more to give them the added nutrition.

To add to LS' list, I feed Toby Fromm and he is thriving. He eats the four star nutritionals line (grain free). They are all life stages and he loves it!

Thanks for all of the info! Just to clarify - Angus was rescued about a month ago. His foster mom was feeding him the same food she fed her other dogs - Blue Buffalo, but not the puppy version.

I don't know if that is all life stages. I would transition both of them to an all life stages food so they are on the same food- it makes it easier for you! I can't recommend Fromm enough. Toby has serious tummy trouble but has been on Fromm for a month and I already see a huge difference in him.
