It's funny how the guidelines have finally changed to every 3 years but most vets still send annual vaccine booster reminders...

Ok I know that Lady and Prince (as of today) have a three year rabies now and a three year distemper. Assuming a good titer test, am I right that I would still need rabies every three years? And that the titer is every year?

Rabies, by law, every 3 years is required. My vet said I should titer every 3-4 years, so while it cost more than vaccines, you don't need to do them every year. Also, if u join something like a dog park, they may require a titer within the past year or if you go to a groomer. But if you aren't flying, grooming, joining dog parks, ect, then I would wait 3-4 years.

As for rabies- in the United States you must vaccinate every three years. In some places, you can titer instead. It depends on local regulations.
For parvo and distemper- I plan on titering every 3-5 years. I don't think it is necessary to do more often than that.

I wanted to add, since you did a 3 year combo vaccine, I would wait 3 years to titer them since technically they are covered for 3 years per the vaccine.

Thank you all for this info, better late than never for sure. I am going to mention this to my vet. Right now both are up to date for 2 or more years.

OK...I'm confused with the posts. Do you guys do shots when they are 1 year old or not? I really like to avoid as much as I can. Star started twitching for a few days after she got the last one and to me it was unnecessary!! It scared me and my husband.
I have to go to a new vet for next year rabies and checkup for sure, I dont care if its a long drive.

It's debatable, some do while others titer. Leo had his puppy shots and he will be due for his 1 year shots this spring some time but instead I will titer. I've read different opinions from vets in books, and came to the conclusion to titer before doing boosters, bc if u did the puppy ones, they should have positive titers.

OK Thanks Zorana. I think I'll just titer instead of the first year. I dont want to lose another dog too soon.
