Default Advice please

I live in a mobile home court. The "rules" are that you can have two dogs under 20 lbs each. I have two Bichons, 10 and 12 years old. I've lived here for 14 years. I adopted a puppy mill Chi a year and a half ago. The plan was to socialize her, potty train her, etc., and find her a great forever home. But, she has some difficulties that may not ever be overcome and finding her another home is probably not possible. She is not potty trained and can't be handled because she pees and poops when picked up. She is still pretty terrified and even though I wrap her in a blanket and hold her often, she never relaxes. There are rumors in the mobile home court now and then that the owners are going to "crack down" and make everyone adhere strictly to the two-dog rule. There are several tenants who have more than two small dogs. The owners know I have Kozanna. I worry that the owners might sell the court (the owner is getting older) or make everyone adhere to the two-dog rule. This might happen if there are complaints about someone (other than me) who has more than two dogs. My dogs are always under complete control and never loose. I knew the rules when I got Kozanna - my own fault for creating the situation. I saw her picture and read her story and just couldn't resist. I'm willing to just keep her, but that may not always be possible. It could change any day and become necessary for me to find another place for her. I would never take her to the local shelter. If it came to that, I would have her PTS by my vet first. I love her, but she is probably never going to be a cuddly companion dog. I would like to have some ideas about what to do if it came to the point where I had to find a place for her quickly. Anyone have any thoughts?

Surely if you have more than 2 dogs now they can't make you get rid of one,it should be for new people moving in ,the rules should apply.I would get all the neighbours with dogs to have a meeting.(people power )You are doing so well with the poor little Chi,what a sad story.Good luck

Good thought. The two-dog rule was in effect when I moved here and when I got Kozanna. I worry that new owners might try to impose a one-dog or no-dog rule. Guess I know I broke the rule when I got Kozanna and I feel bad and angry at myself for doing that. Put myself in a bad situation and Kozanna, too. Bad mommy!!!

They actually can make you get rid of a dog or move out. I know somebody that this happened to. Hopefully it won't come to that but I think you are smart to have a back up plan. It depends on the contract and who enforces it but they have every right to enforce it if they choose. You are such a good mom to have kept her and taken care of her. Do you know anybody with a heart like yours that might be willing to have a go at it? Let's pray this doesn't come to this but I'd be wracking my mind also. You don't want to pursue rescue???

Yes, I know that can happen, get rid of the dogs or move. It wouldn't be easy for me. I'm retired and on a fixed income and picking up and moving might not be an option. Oh, I'm just angry at myself for getting into a situation for myself and Kozanna! Yes, I would certainly pursue rescue. I am trying to contact the woman who had Kozanna when I got her. Her mailbox is full!! I don't have her phone number any more. I contacted Chi rescue in my area about six months ago and they said it would be very hard to find a place for her because she isn't house trained. I thought rescue was for hard-to-place dogs. I took Kozanna right out of the puppy mill. She had been out for 10 days. I'd take a dozen of them at a time if I could - if I had space and it wasn't against the rules. Just feed them and love them and let them adjust - I thought that's what rescue was all about.

Call you local Legal Aid or here is a website with information of landlord/tenant issues http://www.fhasecure.gov/local/tn/re...nantrights.cfm. I think it depends on your area/rules/laws. I know that in some areas if the owner of the property knows and then allows you to have the 3 dogs she/he is overriding the agreement/lease that you have in writing. Please get legal advise before giving up!!

That's very good advice. Thank you. I will see what can be done before giving up. If I get a piece of paper in my mailbox saying the two-dog rule is going to be enforced on a certain date, I'd like to have a plan of action in place. I try not to borrow trouble, but do believe in being prepared.
