I'm currently looking at a pup to join Astrid and I.
I would want to show him, but there's one thing I'm wondering - he is predominantly black, although he is a tri colour; only four weeks at the moment so hard to tell how he will turn out.

I know that it's impossible to tell whether a puppy will turn out as a good show dog, but he has 10 champions in his five generation pedigree, so that's something.

However, he has different colour paws - from the photos I've seen (the breeder doesn't allow home visits, so I have to decide from photos), his front paws are different colours (and I'm thinking they will stay different colours, no matter how much his pigmentation changes). Both front legs are predominantly black, with tan from the knee down, but one has white up to his 'ankle', almost like a sock.
Would this hinder him in the ring at all?

Also, what other signs are there that he might be a good show dog are there from such an early age?

I have some photos, but I'm not really sure that the breeder would appreciate me spreading them all around the internet, but if anyone can help out, I could always email them to them for advice?

Okay, well, as I'm getting a little desperate for opinions, I'll post his photos here...







I think those are the best photos that give an overview of his appearance... I'm pretty close to saying 'yes', as I do think he might be quite a stunner in the ring, but I'd love some more advice....

(I feel all panicky about this, which is silly, I know! More panicky because I'm worried I'll lose my bond with my current chi, but at the same time worried I'm going to lose a perfect show specimen because I'm being hesitant!)

Do you know anyone in your area that shows? If not maybe a club you can get in contact with to help you out. It is so hard to say. We breed Norwich terriers and can look at them when they are young and have a general idea but it is never 100% and its best to wait until at least 6 months. If you really like him go for it I am sure you will love him all the same if he is not show quality either that or you could place him in a pet home if he is not a show dog.


When you get into showing and breeding you have to make some hard decisions. I know nothing about chis in the show ring but I know with the Norwich you need a pic of them stacked so you can see what kind of top line etc. I think that all colors are allowed except merles in the show ring so socks may not matter but I am not sure.

As far as the bond with you and Astrid, you have nothing to worry about.

It's because they're not vaccinated, so she doesn't want to risk infection...

I'm sure my bond with Astrid will be fine, it's just that at the moment, she's undergoing pretty intense socialisation and obedience training for her nervousness and insecurity. I'm worried a puppy will upset the balance even more, although hopefully by the time the pup is ready (end of April) she will be more settled...

You're right, though, Clek1430, I would love him the same, show dog or not. And there are plenty of other competitions - Obedience / Agility etc - that he could take part in if he's not show quality. It's just that price wise he is quite expensive; what I would consider close to show quality (as far as you can determine at that age!) price...

Is he expensive cause she is selling as a show prospect? If so maybe she would refund to a pet price if he does not turn out to be what you were looking for. just an idea I doubt she would but it can't hurt to ask

I think she charges the same for all her chis, pet or show quality... *cough*£1200*cough*
